Stuff like this needs to be part of driver's ed. I can't believe the number of people who look at me like I'm Nostradamus when I tell them how far our exit is without consulting a GPS or phone based simply on the exit number and the last mile marker (or exit) that we've passed. In a metro area where you've got 5-6 lanes of traffic in each direction, and exits piling up on top of one another, that's the kind of info that can help get you positioned properly when approaching your exit, since the signage may not warn you far enough ahead of time to make any significant maneuvers safely.
