As a car-crazy kid I read an issue of Road and Track from around 1975. The big story was a drive in a GMC Suburban from Alaska down to the tip of South America. Later I began dreaming about an extended trip when I read a scientific study of building a bridge across the Bering Strait linking North America to Asia. Then the idea blossomed: sometime in the future (we’re talking Star Trek time, when the world is peaceful), that bridge will be built, and some crazy journalists/car nuts will drive around the world: the tip of South America, up thru Central, then North, across to Russia, Southeast Asia, to India, Middle East, then Africa down to the southernmost tip, then up around Turkey to Eastern Europe, then Central, over to England and up to Scotland.
