Here’s one: I’ve been told my whole life by many people never to go full lock while maneuvering because it can damage the power steering. What’s up with that? Have you ever heard anyone say that? That doesn’t seem right to me, it makes no sense that manufacturers would design a system that can damage itself under its normal range of operation.

When you turn the wheel, a hydraulic pump is pumping hydraulic fluid to your steering rack to make it push your tie rods, which makes your wheels turn. Once you get to full lock, your wheels can’t turn anymore because the steering rack is at it’s maximum, but the pump is still trying to pump fluid. This overloads your power steering pump and can make it overheat and die. When you’re right before full lock, your pump is silent, but if you push the wheel some more, you can hear the pump struggle.
