In a wet sump oil system, how does the oil get distributed around the engine? Does the crank shaft and connecting arm ends splash into the oil sitting in the sump as they turn, distributing it into the cylinders, below the pistons? How does the oil get to the overhead cams, how does it drain back down? Are there channels in the block that the oil pump distributes oil through? Is the oil meant to act as a coolant in addition to the separate cooling system?

Diagrams and pictures would be best. Thaaaanks!

The pump has a tube that reaches down into the bottom of the sump and sucks up the oil. It then pushes that oil through channels in the block and heads to provide lubrication throughout the engine. In some cases there are actually nozzles that squirt oil onto the undersides of pistons to help cool them, since they do not have any way to be in contact with the actual coolant water.

Be aware that this engine is upside down on a stand, and the oil pan has been removed, but there’s your pickup tube -
