With as many YouTube videos that Jalopnik has posted on transmissions, I’ll never understand how syncros work. Same for automatic transmissions..Just hard to wrap my head around that transmission fluid is what really make car go...

    A synchronizer ring fits in between the gear selector and the driven gear, it uses friction to “sychronize” the rotation speed of the two gears, smoothing out the actual mechanics of the shift.   Right at the 4 minute mark of this vid, there’s a pretty good animation of its function - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCu9W9xNwtI
