My mom told me that if someone is in front of you and is turning, then you have to turn your blinker on to let the person behind you know what the person in front of you is doing. She told me (and by told me I mean screamed) this when we had to stop behind someone on a highway (no turning lanes) and she was convinced we would be rear-ended if I did not do this. It sufficiently scared the hell out of my 15-year-old self.

It was apparently such a common thing in my hometown that my drivers’ ed instructor gave us an hour and a half lesson solely on proper indicator use, including a lengthy discussion of the law which stated drivers must signal THEIR intentions, not the intentions of other drivers.
