Torch, my ‘71 Super Beetle had a bad starter solenoid, but rather than replace it I’d crawl underneath with a long screwdriver and jumper the motor. I did in fact run myself over more than once by forgetting to shift to neutral, and once nearly electrocuted myself while doing this in the rain and parked in a puddle. Even after nearly DYING multiple times, and more than once being stranded because I simply couldn’t see well enough to get the job done, I NEVER replaced it. The car was like this from the day I bought it in 1991 until I sold it in 1997. The first thing the new owner did was replace the starter solenoid.

There’s a French existentialist novel in that story.
