I’m taking part in my first NaNoWriMo this year, and I’m using an approach I’ve used to write before: Every spare minute is a minute you can write.

Waiting for the barista to make my coffee? That’s 2 minutes I can write. Riding in an elevator? That’s 60 seconds writing time. Stopped at a red light? That’s time enough to write a sentence. (I joke: Please don’t do that last one.)

I’m writing the draft in a Google Doc which means I can write at my laptop, but also on my phone. I always have my phone on me and am as guilty as anyone of using any spare few minutes I have to check it. Instead of Twitter, I’m making a point of opening my doc and, even if I don’t know what to write next, at least thinking about the current chapter.
