As a former pit boss, I can tell you that small tips to all hotel staff will go a long ways. When I check-in at a hotel I always hand the person $10 or more and let them know I understand how challenging their job can be. 95% of the time I get a room upgrade or a better room location or view.

    Hey - just curious - I’ve got a Total Rewards Platinum card - but am not what you’d call a high roller - but there is a special room I can use during check-in - does the $10 or $20 tip work there as well? I’ve never tried it.

    YES! The desk people don’t get tipped as often as other team members so they appreciate every gesture. As long as it isn’t a holiday weekend or a crazy booked day they will hook you up.
