I coasted down a hill, crossed two lanes of oncoming traffic, and negotiated the filling station lot with no power steering and without braking and losing what momentum I had. Coasted up to the pump with maybe two feet to spare, but not before clipping the right-hand mirror and shattering it on a phone pole on the way in.

Learned two lessons:

- Don’t let the tank go below a quarter full.

- Be glad you bought the rental insurance.
