Two from Babylon 5:

You can get more with a kind word and a two-by-four than you can with just a kind word.

I don’t literally carry around a 2x4, but when prepping for a what could be a particularly delicate conversation, I try to run through many possible scenarios that could play out so that I can handle a variety of directions. I find that by doing so, the conversation usually goes better than I had feared it would.

If you are falling off a cliff, you may as well try to fly. You’ve got nothing to lose.

When something doesn’t seem to be working, try something different. What’s the worst that could happen?
