This was 4 or 5 years ago. There were bad snowstorms across the midwest. Our flight from St Louis to Chicago was cancelled, and no rental cars were available. I would’ve stayed in a hotel, but one of our party absolutely had to get home.

Amtrak was our only choice if we wanted to leave that night. From St. Louis to Chicago, it was supposed to be about a 5 1/2 hour ride. Our train left St. Louis at 5:30pm. We pulled into Chicago’s Union Station at 7am the next morning.

The engine died somewhere around Springfield, maybe an hour or so into the trip. They had to decouple the engine, and they had to bring another engine from Chicago and couple it to our train.

They ran out of booze and food like 2 hours into the trip.

Oh yeah, then they had Jimmy John’s delivered to the train, but instead of handing out sandwiches to all the passengers, they announced that they would be available for purchase. Cash only.

Fuck Amtrak.
