“Premium makes your car run smoother/longer/better.”

Sure... if the manual recommends 91+ octane or the car has been tuned to get extra performance from it. Otherwise, as we all know, throwing money away.

“All gas at X octane is the same so just get whatever is cheap.”

Except that detergent blends do vary and a considerable number of tests show this variance can substantially increase deposits on the engine when using a low quality fuel. In CA, I won’t touch anything but a Shell or Chevron. Maybe Costco gas is fine, but I’m fine paying an extra $75 a year to know I’m getting the good stuff.
