The Hot Wheels 50 pack is a huge mistake.

I don’t know if there is more joy for the kid in getting a giant pile of Hot Wheels, or if it’s more fun overall to get them one at a time, so I’m not going to weigh in on that.

But from a parent perspective, individual Hot Wheels are like magic when your kid likes cars. You can get them for as little as $0.70, so they’re easy and affordable to use as a carrot, and a better, longer lasting reward than candy. When you’re keeping your kid out running errands for longer than any reasonable person can expect a young kid to be patient through, the possibility of getting a Hot Wheels car out of the deal if they stay good is amazingly effective. And as a bonus, you get to play with it with them when you get home.
