I think someone needs to revise the XKCD “Is It Worth the Time” chart for dollars: http://xkcd.com/1205/

One thing that has improved my grocery bill is moving away from meal planning and just buying a bunch of flexible ingredients that can easily be thrown together into a variety of different meals as my large weekly trip to the grocery store. If I want to fix something specific, then I can run out for a few specific items....but by not having it, I’ll limit those to only once or twice a week (for example if people are coming over). My weekly grocery bill dropped nearly in half and I can still fix meals every night.

I do this as well. With a few staples like chicken, beans, avocados, tomatoes, potatoes, pasta & rice, etc., and the right selection of seasonings I can make a huge variety of meals. Probably 90% of my grocery list is the same 20 items from week to week, but if you asked my husband, he would tell you that we have a huge variety of types of meals, types of cuisines, etc., every week.
