The 2012 Olympics logo is really a sample of terrible design(if you can even call it that). there's not a single rule from the book being followed, there's nothing pleasing or proportional to the dimensions, just a silly bastardization of common-font numbers. Very very bad work for such a huge sum of money. For shame :(

and that's the reason it works...

Interesting article about the whole 2012 branding/logo/etc.

It seems to me like this post is using logos and branding interchangeably. A logo is part of branding, but usually much simpler to produce. The process of branding (or rebranding) a company is a big and complicated job.

(Full disclosure, Im a graphic designer, Im sure im reading into the semantics of this article too much.)

I don't think you're reading into semantics at all. I do graphic design (specifically logos and branding coincidentally) and you're not wrong.

The moment I saw the numbers I knew there was something wrong.

How much does a logo costs to design?

I know the branding part can be really expensive, but there is no way designing a logo costs a million dollars.

You're really sleepy. There logos were designed years ago. you can't phrase that in the present tense. Otherwise it would sound like how much it would cost at today's rates to have somebody design them even though they already exist, which make no sense at all.

"You spent a fortune on an education you could have gotten for $1.50 in late fees at the fucking library."

That quote came to mind. Feels like it applies.

Coca-Cola logo is definitely not free. Just because it hasn't changed much, doesn't mean it hasn't had several costly iterations & updates over the years.

I was thinking the same thing. Clearly no research done here. The Coke logo has underwent minor stylistic changes, and guess what guys, that costs almost as much as creating the logo from scratch.

      S'ok though, research is overrated.

Well, the information being quoted is from stocklogos, so their whole business seems to be in convincing people that good branding is cheap.

I've always liked the Sony logo.

Both the BBC and Sony logos are my favourite I think, then I guess comes Apple, but the Apple logo just doesn't beat Sony's and the BBC's.

Wow. I could've done the BBC logo for 1,800,000 dollars cheaper.

I'm not a fan of the London Olympics logo either.

I didn't know that was the logo for the London Olympics. What is it supposed to be? I would have demanded my money back. I wonder what it cost to design the Apple logo.

Great inspiration comes in a flash or it doesn't come at all. And this article proves it. Most really great pop songs were written in 20 minutes.

I'm reasonably certain that someone got money for the Coke logo. If nothing else, Mr. Ferdinand Coke saw an increase in sales after drawing up a new sign for his oxcart.

imho, these logos would be worth nothing if not for good branding and marketing. but still, some logos are really expensive upfront!

Good point. If the Nike logo was a pouncing cat but with Nike's marketing and products, everyone would look at that as a symbol of athletic clothing.

And as an aside, I can't believe the Olympic logo (and the mascots) were OK'd....hot pink + neon yellow + the Lisa Simpson image has to be as bad as it gets for a mainstream logo.
