I don’t understand the prevailing narrative that Wordle was a gift from a benevolent creator that was ruined by a greedy corporation. In hindsight, isn’t it likely that he just decided early on it was more lucrative to wait and sell his game to a corporation who could monetize it than to monetize it himself?

I have no ill will towards him, this just seems the most logical reading to me.  Wordle was always a “cash grab,” just with good PR.

That makes no sense. Eventually being bought out wouldn’t have precluded making that ad-tracking money in the first place (it’s not something laypeople pay attention to after all); nor is “make nothing off an app and expect to get bought out” anything resembling a strategy.

Here’s a pretty decent article about the creator- it looks like he really had zero expectation that the thing he created would ever amount to anything. So when VCs and people came knocking to throw money at him, he picked the one he thought would take care of it the best, and that was the Times.

Safari is currently blocking 22 ad trackers and 13 ads on this page on Giz. By comparison it blocks 8 ad trackers and 3 ads on Wordle.

    Pot, meet kettle.

Gross? You bet—but it’s also banal as hell. (And before you comment, yes, we know Gizmodo has a ton of ad trackers, too. Believe us, we know.)

Fuckin’ read the article, you dolt.

It still seems a bit hypocritical that “ruining” and “shitty” are right there in the lede while “Gizmodo has a ton of ad trackers, too” is in a dismissive parenthetical a few paragraphs down. Also, “too” implies an equivalency that simply doesn’t exist.

What.... apps on your phone invade privacy?!?! Who would have guessed! /s

Seriously though, why is this a news story? Did people think Wordle was any different from any other app?

I don’t Wordle though I did save the OG website for offline play at a later date of my choosing after the NYT bought it. On a related note, the reports I get from DuckDuckGo’s app and email tracking protection on my mobile device have been eyepopping - well worth grabbing if you haven’t already

Here’s what infuriates me the most about the NYT purchase: they’re willing to vomit $1mm+ on this game but not carve out a relatively small amount of money to continue development of their games app. On Android, they’ve been promising stats on the NYT Games app for literally 4 years, and they’ve done fuckall about it. Somehow I doubt Wordle will even make it into the NYT games app because that would involve actually doing some programming.

I am a diehard fan of Will Shortz, but god damn, FUCK the NYT for this chickenshit behavior.

Nah, I don’t care at all that the NY Times is putting ad trackers on Wordle. More websites do this than don’t. It doesn’t change my life in any single way. Literally could not care less that they are doing this.

My partner: plays Wordle every day, noticed absolutely no difference between pre/post NYtimes acquisition. And doesn’t care.

Me: also plays every day, also noticed no difference between pre/post, but just read his tenth article attempting to torture the acquisition into some kind of ongoing news concern.
