Sometimes I get on that “ the Democrats need to step up” train too. We voted and gave them a mandate to make real change, not tell us what they’re not about to do. This message doesn’t need to go to the people or the progressives within the Democratic party. It specifically needs to be understood by the party’s leadership. People like Biden and Pelosi, who even after they acquitted Trump again said she thinks its important for the country to have a strong Republican party. People like that just want to preserve the 2 party duopoly on our system. So the question is will the Democratic party choose to put people over politics?

seriously. she’s already proven numerous times in the past she’s total shit at leading, but for her to utter that it’s important for america to have a republican party - im just at a complete and total loss of words about a fucking terrible leader that i had no voice in her being im so angry.

      I assume that’s rhetorical.

Let’s consider some of the appointees, shall we?

Avril D. Haines as the DNI. Who was cozy with both Obama and Shrub, and directly oversaw ‘precision drone strikes’ where ‘precision’ is ‘a few dozen civilians is fine.’ Seems perfectly fine if your objective is targeted murder I guess?

Marcia L. Fudge as the secretary of HUD. Which is as big a slap in the face as you can get. Representative Fudge is my district. Everyone wanted her heading agriculture. Agriculture is what she knows. It’s what she’s pushed. (Remember, agriculture oversees things like food stamps.) Instead, ‘fuck you, here’s HUD,’ because it’s a beyond gerrymandered district they think they can’t lose.

Miguel A. Cardona for Secretary of Education. He seems qualified, having been Connecticut’s education commissioner, right? And he used to be a public school educator! You know except for the fact that he was one of the loudest and most urgent voices to reopen in-person schools at the peak of the pandemic. And is extremely pro-charter school, pushing for expansion, even when multiple studies continue to prove that CT’s charters (and charters in general) actively damage BIPOC education and are worse than public schools.

Gina Raimondo as Secretary of Commerce. Jesusfuck. Talk about a ‘DINO.’ She was partner Village Ventures, a VC firm that is pretty damn notorious, and was directly backed by Bain. Yes, that Bain. As the general treasurer, she released a report called ‘Truth in Numbers’ that basically said ‘fuck everyone’s pensions, we’re slashing them to the bone or just pulling them entirely.’ While moving the retirement fund to high fee hedge funds. As governor, she slashed taxes and... went full ‘small government’ by just taking a slash and burn approach to regulations. Oh, and then there’s the failed launch of UHIP and rampant corruption and kicking thousands off Medicaid. And the increased mismanagement of DCYF. And campaigning for Bloomberg.

Oh yeah. Definitely putting people first.

And let’s not point out that they haven’t even nominated anyone for any positions at NASA or NSC, haven’t touched CPSC, haven’t touched the FCC, nobody nominated for the Postal Regulatory Commission, nobody at SSA, nobody for Counterterrorism, and still waiting on the Fed board seat too.

You know, because none of those positions matter at all when the USPS is being actively sabotaged, the FCC has been used to enforce and increase digital red-lining and abusive practices, and so on and so forth.

As far as Keith is concerned, Democrats have to go hard. That means going as far as pressuring any Democrat who supports the filibuster into changing their mind or face a primary challenge.

The Republican Party is a murderous doomsday cult full of Nazis, pedos, and Evangelicals chasing the end times so let’s make sure that we focus on beating up on other Democrats.

Even Schumer doesn’t agree with Biden on not forging student debt. Maybe we can criticize both Republicans AND Democrats because neither are perfect and they work for us. It’s never an either or situation. If you want blind loyalty be a Republican.

I’m not asking for blind loyalty, I’d be happy with people being realistic about the threats we face and not sabotaging us out of sour grapes, cynicism, and/or magical thinking.

“We don’t want to be as gangsta as they are,”

Pretty much. It does not help that the Dem leadership is out of touch and still thinks they can walk things back, when Trump burned down that barn in 2016 and pissed on the ashes.

The only way things aren’t going to burn up is by going bare knuckle with the right and that’s not going to happen. I expect outbreaks of violence all over the place the moment SDNY flies down and slaps the cuffs on Trump or any of the states holds him accountable for his bullshit. And that violence will most certainly be aimed at PoC, with a rare white person getting some too, because Trump supporters feel as if PoC are the reason Trump is no longer in the White House.

Biden might swing a switch at the GOP and smack their hands, but that’s going to be the most of it. He does not have the drive to drive them back, nor does the leadership of the left. He’s going to keep trying to walk things back until it’s too late.

“because Trump supporters feel as if PoC are the reason Trump is no longer in the White House.”

I mean they’re not wrong. BIPOC voted overwhelmingly for Biden, and definitely gave them the Senate. The Dems got +-50% of white voters for Biden. We’re the reason they win.

Oh I’m not without a clue there. I know PoC is the reason. Just that if Trump goes to jail, almost all of his supporter’s rage will most certainly be aimed at PoC, because PoC’s lives are valued less legally and thus, they will feel comfortable assaulting PoC or killing them and not getting as harsh of a jail term.

I can’t believe we’ve apparently already forgotten what a big fucking deal it is that Dems control the executive and legislative branches precisely because of this reason—now the Dems can (for the most part, looking at you Joe Manchin) work around these assholes—who will unironically complain that the Dems aren’t being “bipartisan” or “uniting the country” like Biden said—and get the shit done that needs to be done. As a bonus, if they do it all and don’t get caught dithering among themselves or feeling the need to fret over or respond to all the GOP whining about how “the liberal socialist agenda is being jammed down their throats,” i.e. if they act like Republicans would if the roles were reversed, they might be able to maintain that control for another 2 years beyond 2022.

Yes! The Dems very much need to move forward with the understanding that the Republican party is a bad faith entity. Still, in an article full of descriptions of how this all could devolve into a bloody conflict, it seems like some acceptance of the Dems also extending their hand towards the GOP electorate and trying to maintain and improve our democracy might be expected.

that’s the best part--I think they can do both--they can definitely offer to work with the GOP on bipartisan stuff, but they also shouldn’t be afraid to point out when they’re working with the GOP, and they definitely shouldn’t be afraid to point out when the GOP inevitably resorts to their obstructionist bullshit.  In other words the Dems need to find a way to as politely as possible say about the GOP, “fuck em if they can’t take a joke,” because I know the GOP would do this if the roles were reversed and not blink an eye, even if they weren’t an enraged racist death cult right now.

“There’s no fucking bipartisanship. Get off that ship. It does not work. It’s sinking. It’s done. It’s at the bottom of the ocean. It’s the fucking Titanic. It’s down in the water. Let it go.”

Yup, bipartisanship basically died in the ‘90s.

The assumption moving forward must be that Republicans will cheat, steal, use violence and threats of violence to achieve any and all of their goals. We can no longer take for granted that any election will simply and peacefully be decided by whomever wins the most votes (assuming all voters are even allowed to vote).

Democrats need to be willing to do whatever it takes to win. Democracy itself is, frankly, a really stupid way to pick our leaders and policies. Its only saving grace - and this is an important one - is that it is supposed to keep us all from killing each other. If the very notion of democracy no longer keeps the GOP in check - if their base no longer recognizes that political parties that win elections should have the right to actually govern and enable policies - then democracy is worthless. At that point it’s just might makes right. And given the goal of the modern GOP is the wholesale disenfranchisement and eradication of any population that fits its narrow definition of “American”, this struggle is about survival.
