If you said the packet of dry french onion soup mix that I normally add to sour cream to make a dip, I’d be onboard with trying it. But, my family does NOT appreciate the addition of sour cream to mash potatoes AT ALL. Too creamy for them, they want starchy and thick.

I will say this dip is not sour cream, so it’s not quite the same texture, but these are quite creamy.

But yes, you should add the packet of French onion dip mix. That sounds good too.

They want starchy and thick, you could use this dip instead

This sounds very good. I think I would like to try it, and I bet it would impress Thanksgiving guests. It brings to mind the first time I unknowingly ate White Castle stuffing, and was amazed when the host revealed what it been made from.

I will say, I hope this recipe is reserved for special occasions, it is quite decadent. I make mashed potatoes fairly often, and use about half the amount of butter in your recipe. It’s not that I don’t want to use more, it’s that I don’t want my heart to explode before my children graduate high school.

You could cut some butter if you like; I doubled the amount from another one of my recipes and omitted the milk. But yes, designed this recipe with the Big Turkey Day in mind, though I have consumed most of the batch already (I made them yesterday).

No reason why I can’t do the same thing with mashed cauliflower, is there?

Happiness. Happiness is the reason why you shouldn’t do anything with mashed cauliflower.

Trader Joe’s has their Fried Onion Pieces for Thanksgiving and this article inspired me to add them to my next batch of mashed potatoes.

Meanwhile if it’s terrible, just use it as the jump point for all of the table-bickering that’s about to follow. Arguing mashed potatoes with your drunk uncle is better than arguing about his other favorite topics.

      Uncle Jack: “OBAMA DID 9/11!!!”

You: “AREN’T THESE MASHED POTATOES TERRIBLE!?”

Uncle Jack: “YES THEY ARE! WHY ARE WE YELLING!”

Then you and Uncle Jack embrace.

Two or three years ago, my parents were trying to drop mashed potatoes from the Thanksgiving menu because they were boring. I said, “No, you can’t get rid of mashed potatoes. Make better mashed potatoes.” They eyed me with suspicion and asked how I proposed they do that. I told them to think of mashed potato as baked potatoes without the skin. Because it is baked potatoes without the skin. You can add cheese. You can add butter. You can add bacon. You can add chives.

They added all those things and then acted like I was some kind of mad scientist who’d opened them up to a whole new world of terrible, wonderful culinary inventions. Like, seriously. I gave them Potato Toppings 101 and they thought I’d invented potatoes that charge your phone wirelessly.

It’s a fucking potato! It tastes like carbs! Carbs go with everything! Add whatever you want! It’ll work out!

I might do Thai yellow curry potatoes this year.

My typical approach to mashed potatoes is to add every dairy product in my fridge to boiled potatoes, but this sounds like less work.

You are breaking my spirit with your potato peeling. The only part of the potato worth anything is the peel, even when mashed.

That recipe looks good, but you got the measurements wrong. You’ll need at least 3 more sticks of butter. :-)
