Hey incels, it is YOUR fault that it is involuntary. Quite being assholes or creeps to potential partners and other human beings. Get some fucking self-respect and respect others.

Your logic is flawless and useless. Incels ain’t about that logic.

They have no self-awareness. My life isn’t great right now, but I know who the architect of my woes is. The ugly bastard I see in the mirror. For them, it’s always someone else.

You can always wait? See it on home video or stream it or whatever?

Seeing it in the theatre might be nicer, but not if it runs the risk of being shot.

“also idolize the Joker character, the violent clown from the Batman series, admiring his depiction as a man who must pretend to be happy, but eventually fights back against bullies.”

Except that’s not what the Joker is at all. He’s a clown-themed psycho who kills people for amusement. He IS the bully, and the fact that this movie wants to repaint him as some sort of righteous victim just shows it’s a generic Angry White Guy wish fulfillment movie with some Batman branding shoehorned in.

Have you seen the movie? How do you know this isn’t like just about every other Batman villain where they’re given a sympathetic cause before they eventually turn evil?

The animated series from the 90's is when Batman’s villains started getting humanized and fleshed out in ways that ranged from sympathetic to intentionally deeply disturbing.

The one character that series never went back and gave a new origin story to was the Joker. The Joker is a mythical force of nature. He is cruelty and chaos incarnate. Every attempt to humanize him or give him an origin story has always fallen flat on its face. I have great doubts this will be any different.

I’m getting more and more uncomfortable with this movie and I haven’t even seen it yet. I don’t know whether to feel a bit of relief or even more uncomfortable that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are already mulling over people’s reactions to the film.

That’s the problem: practically NO ONE has actually seen it yet. But everybody and their dog claims to know that it contains horrible things that will destroy the world. Notice it says social media posts related to extremists classified as “incels”, not made by. Sounds almost like a direct quote from the earliest uninformed opinions broadcast about it.

it’s terrible that hollywood has made a movie idolizing incels before making a movie that shits on them

from what i heard, this movie wasn’t originally about “the joker” specifically but that that was added in later. i wouldn’t be surprised if that was how they managed to change the idea to get it made.

      still a terrible idea

Welp, this is definitely the Fight Club of our time.

Which is weird, since I thought Fight Club was the Fight Club of our time.

If incells met at night to kill each other and not innocents, that would be the fight club of our time.

Yeah, I was afraid this was going to happen.

God I hope this movie ends on a beat that is undeniably “fuck these guys” and not a a “Fight Club” scenario.

Fight Club pretty much did end on a “fuck all that shit” beat. It’s not the movie’s fault that some people didn’t understand/willfully misunderstood what it was saying and decided it was about “WHOA MANLY BROS BEING BROS SO COOL” instead of taking the movie as intended (ie. “Toxic Masculinity: The Movie”).

It would be cool if in light of some of this stuff if the folks who have seen it at io9 would do a spoiler filled review.

Wait a minute, military personnel were given a heads up and told to be on alert but ordinary citizens didn’t get the memo?

You have unrestricted access to the Internet; you were as aware as you want to be. Uniformed military are often denied that luxury, and so they need a memo to convey a level of awareness that most civilians take for granted.

Uniformed military also receive safety briefings prior to most holidays. Because people still, apparently, injure themselves deep-frying a frozen turkey.

The bureaucracy in the military treats everyone like children, because some people are.

Oh for fuck’s sake, this is ridiculous. Both that there’s reason to be afraid and that a movie can’t bloody tell a story and character study and hope that the audience will be intelligent enough to take it the way intended, without such extreme, exaggerated reactions from all sides.

      You just proved my point...

Extreme, exaggerated reaction - check, being needlessly aggressive - check, strawman arguments and putting words into my mouth - check, need I go on? (Especially considering that I started with acknowledging the fucked-upness of there being an actual reason to be afraid...)
