Its a nice sentiment but there is no hope in hell that this would ever pass. This is the kind of reparations that whites and other non-blacks loath as this would be free money going to dreaded, lazy black people. I mean people were mad at Warren for stating that she would forgive student loans.

This is the Harris playbook. Endorse centrists like Feinstein instead of progressives, state “support” for progressive policies, and then when they fail to pass because of people like Feinstein, shrug your shoulders and say, “Don’t blame me, I tried didn’t I?” Really mind-boggling to me that anyone is fooled by this crap.

I have a bunch of questions for her because there’s a bunch of addendums in there that would make the bill not even work for whole swathes of Black people.

Not all of us live in redlined areas and the proposed amount of money ain’t gonna do shit for paying closing costs and a down payment in a ton of metropolitan areas (look at Washington DC or Los Angeles). So what’s the plan for those Black people?

Also, how are they going to determine who can benefit and who can’t? Because I’ve seen these type of bills get exploited by White people before.

The down payment is not nearly the most financially onerous part of home ownership. It may be the biggest chunk of money but that isn’t what will bleed you dry. Its the insurance and the taxes and the maintenance and the repairs and of course the mortgage payments. All of which are higher in the cities and affordable properties are often affordable because they need repair, often expensive repairs like roofing or plumbing work. Cheap houses are always cheap for a reason.

When you rent, those expenses are baked in, so you pay them either way. Unless they buy too much house, this wouldn’t be a concern.

Secondly, you are completely missing the point.  A "cheap" home that you pay off in a generation creates wealth.  Your kids can live in it for the price of taxes and insurance, or the home can be sold and used to buy other properties.  That's wealth creation across generations, and that is the goal.

You’re absolutely right on this. Property taxes are killer, especially in the blue states which have a stronger POC presence. Look at those TV shows where people are given free houses, and they land up losing them when the tax bills and huge utility bills start coming in.

I like how the reaction to Kamala Harris proposing something that directly benefits black people is “fuck that, this will never get passed, and it’ll make white people angry enough to vote against her”. It goes back to every discussion of electability ever, and is completely about respectability politics. It’s BS and y’all need to cut that shit out

Need I remind you that 1.) Not directing policies aimed at the economic advancement of black people is that same thing many of us give candidates like Biden and Bernie shit over, and 2.) White people don’t vote Democrat anyway, so what’s the point of getting scared that they’ll vote against it? White people as a demographic are going to vote for Trump regardless of what Harris proposes if she’s the nominee. White people are gonna white people no matter what the problem is.

You can’t try and advance the lives of black people by sitting around and making concessions to white people and hope eventually they throw us a bone. That’s the kind of thing Barack gets shit over. You have to put shit like this on the table and at least force the fucking conversation to happen and for white people to tie themselves into knots explaining why it’s bad.

People are so scared of driving white folks to the polls and they forget there's far more black and brown people than their are white people around.

Harris’ plan would be a game changer. And long af overdue. Of course... most whyppl will be outraged that it was even suggested, despite the clear theft of wealth they’ve enjoyed as a result of the wealth gap and all it’s supporting policies AND the multiple ways some of them will also benefit from this plan.

This country really wont see any meaningful progress until the appropriate levels of outrage are weaponized against the mega corps and ultra wealthy instead of hardworking people just tryna get by.

Kamala has zero shot. If she gets the nomination, do you think this and reparations are going to fly in battleground states like Florida (low percentage of black voters), Wisconsin (negligible percentage), Pennsylvania (low percentage), Ohio (low percentage), Nevada (negligible percentage), and others?  Blacks are 13% of the population and I’m just baffled that some of these Democratic hopefuls don’t understand that.

Trust me, once it gets to the general you won’t be able to pay most of these candidates who are bending over backwards for the black vote to give them the time of day. Then again, looking at how blacks typically vote there is zero need to give them any attention. They know that if they are going to vote they are going to vote for the Dem candidate.

I'm sure the Latinos, Asians, Middle Easterners and Native Peoples (the ones who really should be apologized to the most) are thrilled to be left out.

No one here seems to understand how free markets work. Guess what happens when $100 billion extra dollars flow into the real estate market ? Housing & Rental prices will increase making it even harder to buy/rent a home/apartment. This will be especially bad in areas where it would be concentrated, ie, urban areas with large POC populations.

Rents are completely out of control.  It’s not sustainable.  I’d like to see a candidate address that issue.
