What kind of “administrating” does the city administrator do?

I’m sadly not amazed that a small town in GA is racist. I am amazed that a 1500-person town has a mayor AND a city administrator and gets out-of-state applicants for that job. I’m pretty sure my neighborhood has more people that that.

I can’t believe more black people aren’t moving there. Less than an hour drive from Atlanta, but with (I assume) lower taxes and cost of living?! Black people, gentrify Hoschton!

Things are different here than they are 50 miles down the road.

I mean, “things” are literally only this way because YOU’RE this way.

“We can’t have black people here cos there’s too much racism!” I mean, if you’re gonna say this, then you are the fucking problem.

It’s a shockingly common sentiment among racists to try and hide their true reasons. When I was younger I had a co-worker say that they didn’t think our restaurant should hire black people “because people in this town are rude to black people.” fucking what...

Well, don’t you see, Jesus doesn’t want us to do interracial marriage. And from that, you know he doesn’t want black and white people to work together at all. It just isn’t right!

That’s the way I was brought up and that’s the way I believe...

The racist ministers who taught me the word of god told me it’s bad, so it’s bad. How could something I learned long ago be wrong?

    Would you look at that.

The same “Christians” that said I’m not getting into heaven for meatdaggering booties also think that black people shouldn’t be able to hold a job with any sort of authority.

All I can say is that I hope they got good WiFi in Hoschton. Otherwise these “it’s a sin” folks won’t be able to scroll through Shade Room and Baller Alert while pushing carriages for President Mayor Reverend Cletus Buchanan.

Man, people who use Christianity like that are the worst. I mean that literally. Or maybe white Christianity is different.

My wife’s parents left very good jobs in a major city to move to a literal third world country to start a church and try to help people. They’ve been there for almost 20 years now. I have nothing but respect for them.

They’d call themselves Christians, but there’s no way they’re practicing the same religion as the racist trash bags in this article.

I’m a Christian and my Christian beliefs are you don’t do interracial marriage.

Gee, I’m a tech geek, so I used the google to do a little searching, and found out that the heathen moses (of the 10 commandments fame) had an african (read black) wife. So if interracial marriage is against god’s will, why did he give moses his holiest of orders, rather than smite him down for his evil doing.

There is also nothing in the bible that says anything against interracial marriage unless you’re already stretching the lines and drawing symbolism and making up equivalencies to fit your desired outcome.

So, just to clarify, I’ll rewrite your sentence:

I’m a Christian Racist and my Christian Racist beliefs are you don’t do interracial marriage.

And thus, you’ve written the mission statement of 80% of “Christian” churches in America.

As a person who went to bible college, and studied the bible solidly for years after my time at college. Was a deacon, etc. I can confirm that your googling is accurate. You’d have to remove a couple phrases very far from their context to support a doctrine like that. But that said, even good churches I have been to would use things out of context to support whatever. One of the things I love about the bible is that sometimes phrases out of context can really resonate with a moment you are having in your life (like any good book or song lyric). But then people try and apply that to others and the wheels come off. Mostly because anything that resonates is self affirming. So it can amplify whatever your believe, even if what you believe is trash.

Its honestly a master crafted set of books in terms of how much you can use it for self hypnosis. Especially as the book spirals in on itself, allowing you to spiral your thought processes as you interconnect and stitch images from text written centuries apart. It can feel quite invigorating. Even more so if you have been praying in tongues as a gateway to being in a susceptible self hypnotic state. The bible was almost like a prototype for Youtube conspiracy theory rabbit holes. Which is why I find it fascinating how many conspiracy theories popular in America, end up involving christians vs some new world order when you go deep enough into them (flat earth et al.).

    Holy God.

I grew up in Hoschton. My parents still live and work there. They live in the same small neighborhood as Councilman Cleveland. I’m of mixed race, but I don’t particularly want to say which, as it might make my family easy to identify.

I grew up hearing my teachers telling racist “jokes” to the class, hearing my science teacher speak in tongues, having one of my math teachers, apropos of nothing, tell the class she “didn’t like queers,” and so on FOREVER. I can’t even begin to count the amount of horrible racist statements were made in front of me, that I was forced to nervously laugh off in the moment... only to be hit by the follow-up punch of “not you though, you’re one of the good ones.”

One of the many sad parts of this article is that it mischaracterizes Hoschton as some rural hick town, secluded from modern life. When I was growing up there almost 20 years ago it was, but in the last five years it has begun transforming into an affluent suburb of Atlanta. I can’t speak too much for this Councilman Cleveland, but I can for a fact state that he lives primarily among college educated individuals AND several immigrant families. His (and his kind’s) isn’t a sin of ignorance, but of willful hatred. His blood boils whenever he sees my parents walking together through HIS neighborhood. And I know he isn’t alone.

I live in the Bay area these days, and another one of the sad pieces of information this article highlights for me is how hard it is for the rest of America to believe places like this aren’t just backwater redneck one-offs, but actual representations of regular towns across America. In the era of “Zuckerberg’s Tour Across America,” my sheltered silicon valley colleagues can’t fathom that some of our country is rotten to its core and should be treated with as much sympathy as a burst appendix. These well meaning, data driven, optimistic dingus’ will go on to vote for any moderate that calls for “bipartisan solutions” and “togethership™” because they aren’t willing to accept the reality that ~30% of America is LITERALLY watching them and their families through the blinds with a boiling hatred, plotting their courses of action.

Thanks for this additional context on Hoschton.  Given how much Atlanta sprawls, that was the feeling I was getting - that it’s basically becoming an exurb - about the town.

Shit thanks ... I almost rather pretend it's a silly rural isolated hick town. But you are right we have to recognize it's really what many suburban cities are like just not as blatantly open about it.  And now I will avoid news for the rest of the day. Smh
