Ugh. I love Harris but she needs to change this real fast. This is encroaching on 1st amendment rights way too much. She is just giving support to Trump’s bullshit with saying this.

Girl that’s too much dip on your chip.

Right now she’s on a roll smacking down Republicans and acknowledging her past mistakes. If Harris tries to become the arbiter of what kind of discourse is safe, it’s going to blow up in her face. Leftists won’t trust someone who was strictly letter of the law even if it meant supporting ICE and causing harm to trans* people and the Far Right won’t trust a black woman to not be part of some conspiracy to silence them.

If I were on her team, my advice would be to stay on track hitting homeruns with what you’re good at. This is too ambitiously vague to be a net positive. If you want to touch on Russian bots using Facebook, you name Facebook. That gives her base something to latch onto. Americans are horrible at thinking in the abstract.

I disagree on that, it’s only certain Americans that are bad at it, mostly conservatives.

“If you profit off of hate, if you act as a megaphone for misinformation or cyber warfare, if you don’t police your platforms, we are going to hold you accountable,” Harris said.

Fuck, I literally just posted something in support of Harris last week talking about how serious candidates don’t just make empty speeches about pretty ideas, but actually present workable and practicable policy proposals. I’m going to have to eat my damn words.

FB is ready to be regulated (per Zuck’s own words), but I don’t see how anything Harris could plan to do to curb “hate speech” online would get by the Supreme Court—and that’s just setting aside the very real possibility that whatever content guidelines the government comes up with will just end up getting used as a cudgel against marginalized.

The day there’s a hate speech law on the books in the United States (and assuming it passes Constitutional muster), it’s not going to go well for black twitter, or anyone making jokes about white people, or saying #killallmen.

It gets complicated, but seriously, we black folks need to knock off the racism, though.

Not saying that it should be illegal, but come on fam, when they go low, we go high.

Who is going to appoint the Facebook regulators? Politicians that accepted a bunch of money from Facebook employees.

Where are these regulators going to go to work after a couple of years of regulating Facebook?

Uh-huh? How about combatting hate among the police industry? Making sure that cops don’t get protected for profiling, and ensuring that black people are not rail roaded into prison? Maybe even taking action on DAs who have acted in concert with those cops? Nah, course not. That would lead to the quickest self-impeachment in history. While I’ll vote for her if she gets the nom, she shouldn’t get the nom. Maybe next time, if she does some work for the Innocence Project in the intervening years, until then... Nah.

Nah, man. Don’t start that. I disagree with virtually all of Harris’ career choices, but I ain’t gonna agree with any claim that she isn’t black.

Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Poland, Austria and others have hate speech laws. All of the domestic terrorists, listed in the article, were active on websites that harbored racist rhetoric. A Twitter employee, who called out Jack Dorsey, stated it makes no sense that any anti-American, anti-Zionist, or anything slightly terrorist related can get someone quickly banned, while being racist, anti-Semitic, or anti-Muslim is a judgement call (only if you are too/very racist, too/very anti-Semitic, too/very anti-Muslim by Twitter’s undefined standards).

How many more people in synagogues, mosques, or black churches have to die from people radicalized by hate-filled websites before we demand they be banned from our country?

How would that even work?  Purge Twitter and it’s only a matter of time until - “Nazi Twitter” becomes a thing.

I’d think the Justice Dept / FBI would do well to use social media as a road map to people who just might be guilty of crimes like, oh, illegal gun ownership. If they’re going to hang out the banner announcing themselves, might as well take advantage of it. The material support law linked to in another post above would come in handy as well - make these people radioactive.

Warren went after breaking up Big Tech first. Now Harris. Honestly, I don’t feel like this is a winning issue, especially because the “how” is so important. Plus the majority of Americans are not on social media.

That said, she’s the senator from California and probably has a lot more data about Silicon Valley than I do so maybe that’s affecting her messaging.

What exactly are Diamond and Silk working so hard at? Growing plastic hair?

The fact that the president takes time out of his day to write this garbage and defend coke heads like James Woods tells you everything about what kind of garbage he is and what kind of garbage people support him
