Cue up Eddie Murphy’s “This is my house! And if you don’t like it, get the fuck out!” 😂

Also, I’m pretty sure she could sue for having her 4th amendment rights violated because “an argument” isn’t probable cause for shit. Virtually anything can be interpreted as “an argument”, with or without raised voices.

Exactly. Even though i knew from the headline that it turned our right for her and Kevin, i was biting my nails over the thought that easily Kevin could have got his butt off the sofa and made any move they thought was toward them. Any excuse could have caused them to say, “I feared for my life.”

Bingo. And I would double-dog-dare those cops to come into court with that “we got a call” bullshit, because I am 100% certain they did _not_ get a call, and their own dispatch records would prove that. Let them put in testimony and on public record that their department’s officers flatly lie to members of the community like that -I think any PD public relations type worth their salt would get the department to settle that shit out of court in a heartbeat.

I’m so glad she told that cop she was scared of him. I feel like there’s some kind of unspoken stereotype of black folk not feeling emotions like “fear” or “sadness” or “ennui” or “existential terror”. We only get “animalistic anger” or “child-like jolliness”. And we all know what the cops zero in on and expect to respond to when they interact with us.

ETA: I’m flagging all the racists who got shit to say about this very brave woman, just so ya’ll know.

some kind of unspoken stereotype of black women that they have to be strong 24/7 and carry everyone on their shoulders. Fuck that. It’s OK to be afraid.

Don’t forget that any time a black woman shows any sort of passion or strong emotion, whether it be anger, excitement, or just simple sarcasm, they get labeled as “sassy”.

And then there’s the label “Angry Black Man”. Like it’s not okay for us to be angry. And the people who use that term never stop to think that maybe there’s a reason we’re angry.

Those labels are just a modern version of the term “uppity”.

These grays out here staying SO MAD about this with a lot of hypotheticals.

“well what about people who don’t want to hear your loud ass arguments?”

Motherfucker, they probably heard them for a hot second. Folks argue. If it’s a documented, regular occurrence that gives you a reason to believe it is or will be violent, especially at night, then take action. We don’t know if it was or wasn’t part of a pattern, so let’s not reach because you’re sensitive, Steve.

“And what about what happens after the camera went off? What would you be saying then?”

Whew, jumping to conclusions that just don’t exist. Good job, Chad.

That was awesome. It could have been even better is she didn’t spend so much time explaining herself and started yelling “goodbye” over their rationalizations a little sooner.

Can we talk about Kevin? From the article, I thought he only spoke up the first time, but it seemed that he kept jumping in when she clearly was taking care of business. Stupid? Scared of the police? Scared of her?

sounded to me like Kevin might be her son, cos she told him to shut the fuck up in the way my mother does when I try and “help” her in any argument she might have.

There are only .6% Black people in Montana. Her, the man in her house, and maybe Jimmy down the street. They probably get more outrageous calls about Whites and Native American than Blacks.

I know some people don’t think Black people can be frightened, sad, and other human emotions, but the fact she said it and still told them to leave is something. I am surprised they didn’t arrest her anyway.

Yeah, Montana is pretty pale. Years ago on a trip to Glacier National Park, I only saw one other black person who wasn’t just driving through.

I would love to see someone do an ethnography of black folks who live as ultra minorities in places like Montana. What are the circumstances of their lives? Were they born there? What keeps them there? Do they feel a connection to home? I really want to know!

Yes, what is up with cops thinking they have the run of people’s property? They came to my house once and said it was because there had been reports of a woman screaming. I was home and hadn’t heard anything of the kind and told them so. Then they ask if they can walk through my house to the back yard to check it out. The answer was no and the rookie cop the three older cops were with had the nerve to say they had a right to. Outrageous. Fresh out of the academy and he’d already forgotten the law. I told them to come back with a warrant if they thought something was up and to step off my property in the meantime.

Never heard from them again nor of any screaming woman and none of the neighbors did either.

I am honestly surprised that this did not go bad. I was worried for her as she kept pointing at the cop and getting in his personal space. Please don’t get me twisted, she was never really doing anything wrong. However I was worried that her actions were close enough to your average cops “line” that i was surprised he did not take action to validate and cover up his infraction.

I’m still anxious despite her being okay at the end of the video. She was phenomenal. Yet now I worry about her safety in Montana due to retaliatory behavior by cops. There’s deep irony in the notion of her “getting in his personal space” when he’s trying to invade her home. Dictionary meanings of “invade” and “intrude” so clearly apply here.
