This is cruel and unusual punishment.

    This is child abuse.

    This is torture

Fire, arrest and prosecute the criminal officers that did this.

      This......is working as intended.

      “Are there no prisons?”
      “Plenty of prisons...”
“And the Union workhouses.” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
      “Both very busy, sir...”
“Those who are badly off must go there.”
“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”
”If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

The medical neglect and abuse that our jails heap on inmates - especially the mentally ill - is unconscionable. I don’t know about Broward County, EFF-ELL-AY, but here in California a lot of counties outsource their medical malpractice to private for-profit contractors like California Forensic Medical Group.

Now, I’m not saying that privatizing the prison-industrial complex provides an incentive for incarcerating and inadequately caring for people, and I’m not saying that private for-profit health care values corporate earnings over human health, and I’m CERTAINLY not saying that combining the two has resulted in a nationwide crisis of inmate suffering and death caused by medical malpractice, motivated by greed, and facilitated by governmental opacity and public ignorance and indifference. But yeah, that is exactly the hell what I’m saying.

Yeah, about a quarter way through your first sentence there I was like, “I am! I am saying that!” I agree with you, this is cruelty for the sake of greed.

I believe that Fl does privatize their medical care, but Fl sucks.  And lots of secrets happen under the privatization.

There is no hope for this country’s incarceration system. It must be completely torn down and started over, and that’s never, ever going to happen.

Tearing down and starting over was meant to be a feature of this country’s character.  The founding fathers imagined that we would rewrite the constitution about every 25 years (once per generation). If we did it even just once every 100 years, there would be opportunities to fix overlooked items and expand civil rights to match shifting culture.  Instead, we have the oldest constitution in the world.  Many unconstitutional laws are still on the books.  We’re very far from what the founders wanted.

Carter told the Miami Herald that Jackson was in custody for drug-related charges, and that the child is in the care of an “appropriate caregiver.”

Oh, the child is in the care of an “appropriate caregiver”??? WHEW!!! I’m so glad that these people who did this unconscionable thing have decided that wherever they stuck the baby must be appropriate, especially since, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s page:

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is committed to maintaining the standards of a modern, progressive law enforcement agency.

So I guess lone birth by a mentally ill woman is a new, progressive feature? God, I hope Davos doesn’t already have her filthy claws in this poor baby...

Sounds like she got a good public defender who's not going to roll over for the local sheriff. God knows how many stories like this have been buried because the lawyer appointed to protect a person's rights decided to play ball with their coworkers. Hopefully sheriffs are elected in Florida because otherwise there's probably not a chance of anyone actually facing consequences for this. It's a damn miracle they didn't find two dead people in the morning.

They are elected, but that doesn't mean much. Many run uncontested.

“The Sheriff’s office said they were informed of the incident two days after Jackson gave birth...”

So about 2 and a half days after she could've used some help. Nice work there, cops.

Isn’t “born in prison” exactly Bane’s origin story? Remember the simpler times of the early 90s, when shit like this was only (acknowledged as) happening in fictional South American tyrannies?
