“Eighty-eight years ago, she did something that was, at the time, an acceptable means of conversation,” Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. told the New York Times. “I’m not saying it was right, but the times were different.”

I’m always so confused by this refrain. Ida B. Wells was investigating and reporting on lynchings, in the 1890's. The NAACP was established in 1909 literally because of the anti-lynching movement. Ida B. Wells died in 1931. That these recordings had to be found tells you all you need to know about how “acceptable” they were even at the time. Even at the time this (anti-black racism) wasn’t something discussed in polite conversation because even (white) people knew that it was wrong.

So, drop the bullshit that this was “acceptable” even with just the greater society when she recorded the song in 1938.  It wasn’t.  You don’t get to rewrite American history.

Anyway, with the image that the nickname “Songbird of the South” in those times conjures up for any black person, it is hardly a surprise that these recordings were found.

Bingo. Considering that shit “acceptable” is akin to considering some small farm town “real America” ... It automatically dismisses the input of more than half the country into the conversation. Fuck that noise.

I think he meant “this was acceptable amongst whites pushing the narrative that blacks and other races were of lesser value”.

Naw, ditch the song too. Add “The Star Spangled Banner” to that same dumpster; at least until this country comes anywhere near living up to the creed of “liberty and justice for ALL.” I’m willing to keep “America the Beautiful” on a probationary status, but if that orange shitstain gets re-elected next year all of this “patriotic” shit can die in a fucking fire.

So. I hate the “It was acceptable then” argument.

Cause no it fucking wasn’t.  Society turned their head the other way but it was still wildly seen as a wrong thing to do.

Exactly. It’s not an argument, it’s a weak excuse. Whenever folks don’t want to stop doing something (or be blamed for continuing to do something), they try to use a twisted version of history to convince people that it isn’t wrong.

Some critics of the teams’ decision see it as political correctness gone wild, saying it’s unfair to judge Smith by today’s norms.

We’re not judging her by today’s norms. Racism has always been wrong. Period.

First they came for our black face singers, and I said nothing. Then they came for our statues of racists and traitors, and I said nothing. Then they came for our racist singers and I said nothing.

Will someone please come for our racist president so I can continue my streak?

I do have a question, however. All this “she must go!” Is all well and good, but what of the song writers?

So Mayor Ernie “recognized that some people did something…”?

That seems perfectly reasonable and in no way a take that could provoke widespread rage and death threats!

What’s always left out when people make this type of argument is that they’re only talking about white people. It was “acceptable” to white people to be racist, but .what about everyone else...?
