I am appalled that you do not think of them first as an italian beef stand.

Their flame-broiled burgers are my go-to.

They’re always in the top five places for an Italian Beef.

    Mayonnaise in cake.

Most overrated place in Chicago. It is the McDonald’s of Chicago food.

Mayo is oil and eggs. Lots of cakes have oil and eggs. It really isn’t weird if you understand why things work.

Isn’t McDonalds the McDonalds of Chicago food since McDonalds is from Chicago?

i lived in chicago for 12 years and i never understood the love for portillos, but my gf will do anything for this cake. i sent her a <3 shaped valentines cake for 4 years in a row.

The key is that it is also a milkshake addition, where they add an entire slice to the icecream and blend. i think a comedian talks about it. i got one on accident when they screwed up my chocolate malt (still trying to find a good one of those) and gave me the cake shake instead. i wasnt a happy camper cause it’s not my favorite texture.

we had one just down the street from our house and it was like a biscuitville down here in NC. the lines can just wrap around a location and they often times had runners with tablets taking orders while 2 lanes of cars queued.

I’ve lived in the Chicago area my entire life and I do not understand the fascination with portillos. There many smaller family places that have the food better, cheaper, and/or bigger. Portillo’s is fine if you want something that won’t be bad and are willing to pay more for it.  And the lines... I don’t get it. The lines alone are reason for me to go elsewhere.

The only one I know of in the city is in a particularly touristy section of River North. So I've never been.

I would do deeply illegal things in a heartbeat for a Portillo’s Italian beef sandwich right now (in case anyone’s offering).

I went to undergrad in Chicago; now I live in California and the one place I know of around here that has Italian beef serves them with a)lettuce and b)juice exclusively on the side (but hey we can say how much juice we want!)

      Weep for me.

Really, it should be more famous than our sausage-cheese casserole.

You should be eating the “casserole” of the spinach-cheese variety.

Seriously, Chicago-style spinach deep-dish is one of the best-tasting pizzas I’ve ever had and it concerns me that you, as a Chicagoan, may not know of its superiority (of course, maybe you do?)

Amen. The one from Lou’s is amazing and one of the few reasons to eat deep dish more than once a year.

Chicago’s best culinary export is chocolate cake from a hot dog stand

Can I get some ketchup on that?

The box the cake comes in has two boxes that can be checked: “Lemon” and “Chocolate” to indicate what is inside.

Never seen a Portillo’s lemon cake.

I used to make these when I was high schooler working at Ports in the 90s.

You can make them at home. Start with Duncan Hines, sub in a cup of mayo for the 1/3 cup of oil, bake an extra 5 mins or so. fin.

Portillo’s is neither the best hot dog place, nor the best italian beef place - although it’s pretty decent with both - but man do they have a spot in my heart for that chocolate cake shake.
