While all li-ion batteries can eventually succumb to swelling (I just helped my coworker repair her old, but trusty, 2011 MacBook Pro, where the trackpad was popping out because of this), it’s pretty egregious for Apple to not replace the battery if the watch was still under warranty - there’s just NO WAY that you could put that many cycles on the battery inside of a year.

This is why tech should have user-replaceable batteries.

The game now is to have the prettiest, smallest devices around, but that means devices that will need to be replaced (or serviced) in under two years. Environmentally, this is not acceptable. We know batteries need to be replaced regularly so every manufacturer should be forced to allow the owner to do that easily on their own.

Stepping down from the soap box in Gizmodo Hyde Park now.

Agreed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they denied the warranty repair because she mentioned the part about her daughter trying to push the screen back in place.

Word of warning for all. If something like this happens to one of your devices while in warranty, LEAVE IT ALONE. Don’t try and fix it just because you need to do “just 1 last thing.” Bring it in and do that last thing in the presence of the technician after they’ve already inspected it and determined it not to be the user’s fault.

You did this to yourselves Apple acolytes. If you hadn’t salivated over uselessly thinner devices for a decade we wouldn’t be here well past the line of form over function.

I’m keeping my 2015 MB Pro for as long as it can hold up and I just pray that both the public and Apple reverse course soon (if ever).

Worse part is that the alternatives are taking all the wrong cues from Apple. I’m looking at you Google and the stupid Pixel 3 notch and gesture-only controls! That notch sure is useful and was totally worth the step down in speaker balance and I certainly always want my navigation to take just that bit longer!

I don’t think it’s the users that’re clamoring for thinner devices, at least judging from the myself and people I speak to. Apple just does what they want and in a way that you can’t get that complete package anywhere else. So you’re kind of forced into buying into it or at least I am

Apple certainly started making it a point in their product announcements and specs but that was because back then it was definitely something that could be improved for the sake of the user and the public confirmed it.

But then the point came were thinner was no longer a substantial benefit yet Apple kept going and the public kept eating it up. Now we are finally seeing the drawbacks of this trend come to unfortunate fruition.

The bad thing is, that the common, non-techie customers do not realize that the root of pretty much all these issues comes down to those slimmer profiles so they still expect the slim devices without any of this issues and now Apple is in a bind of their own doing.

I guarantee that a large percentage of the common public that is currently going through these issues would also complain if Apple came with their next gen devices being thicker than the current ones for the sake of cooler operating temps and longer battery life and going back to shit that wasn’t broken (e.g. keyboards).

I have had this happen to basically every ipod I’ve owned over the years. Thing I don’t get is I end up replacing the batteries myself using chinese parts that actually outlast the original Apple ones. Not only that but Apple batteries could not last in my car in any temp under 40 degrees F but the knockoff batteries don’t have this issue at all. Go figure. I am not a huge fan of Apple but I did just buy a new apple watch series 4 - you can bet I bought the 3rd party (non apple) 3 year damage warranty for it too!
