Thank you for this! To deny his existence as a complex multifaceted human being is a great disservice. His experiences made him and taught him he could change things. That danger is real and it’s why so many want to end gang life and replace it with real solutions for everyone.

My niece is a student at 59th Street Elementary in Hyde Park where this photo was taken. This is a small, overpopulated but neglected and underserved school where every student is either Black or Hispanic. On that day, Nipsey donated $10,000 to renovate the playground’s old basketball courts. I genuinely believe he wanted to be a positive influence on those Black and Brown kids everybody else ignores. He was very humble and down to earth, had no problem posing for pics with the kids and their parents. It was a very nice family event. I’m Mexican but my family and I stand with Nipsey and the legacy he leaves behind. Despite his known gang affiliation, his generosity touched our hearts and I feel petsonally obliged to pay testimony and speak good on his character. I will forever be proud to have been born and raised in the same neighborhood as Nipsey. As a college graduate that left and came back, I will forever respect him for staying true to himself and giving back to South Central when he could have left it behind like everybody else that made it out and made it big has. He put in major work into our community that will impact generations of kids of color to come. That is powerful and for that, he truly is a hero. God bless his soul. #RIPNIP

This gives a fuller, more personal view of who he was and what he meant to the South L.A. community because of what he did and how he treated folks. Clearly, regardless of others’ hurt, the loss reverberates way more powerfully for y’all. It’s horrible that a place he built for financial and community renaissance has been turned into yet another landmark for devastation, grief and ptsd.  Thanks for this article. I offer sincere condolences.

About being a Crip, I imagine he had some kind of understanding/respect that permitted him to transcend the set cos there are pics of him wearing red as well, without incident.

Great article. I respect the man even though I didn’t know him personally. A true role model, and he did more in his short life than some could only hope to do in a lifetime. I never look at things as being Black & White, but everything in life has a grey area.
