I don’t consider myself to be a racist and I rarely talk about race.
It was at this point I stopped parsing his email for meaning because after this, it was all bullshit.
And then Michael drops the most epic of comebacks that actually made me tear up, because that story has been told in some form or other in the black community SO MANY GODDAMN TIMES it’s like a legend or a fable, but in real life.
I’m logging off of Kinja for the rest of the day. Thank you Michael.

I’ve said this many times: please write a book. Please. Your writing is ferociously beautiful, powerful, moving, thought provoking. It’s needed.
Now:
“...most white people aren’t plotting to oppress black people or keep white people in power.”
That’s part of the problem. Like, really. REALLY really. I’m white, and I’m (finally) aware that part of my privilege is that I don’t actually need to do anything at all to perpetuate a system that is designed to keep white people in power and keep black people (and poor people, and women, and etc etc etc) down. That’s a feature, not a bug.
I have to actually work to make things more equal, and more equitable. So do you. You clearly should have the knowledge and experience to know that and to do better. Most (white) people don’t, won’t, “can’t.” THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

I try to no longer be shocked by any behavior. But truly these weekly impudent calls for Michael to engage with them (which Micheal does beautifully every week - today I teared up) is shocking to me. The thinly veiled provocations with the wringing of the hands and “why I never”, is exhausting. It’s just part and parcel of them demanding that we explain our reactions to their insidious fuckery.
