Killing one innocent person would be too many.

For the right, that only applies to two-celled and up entities growing in the womb. Once you’re out, it’s OK to kill some innocents. Because, you know, if they were really innocent they wouldn’t have even been arrested. Right.

Well, unless there’s a witchhunt out to get you or your comrades advisers.

Good! At some point, the death penalty becomes less about the actual accused person and their crime, and more about what we as a society lose by being the sort of people who accept state-sanctioned murder. The death penalty has no place in a modern society.

Even though it has been said to be a deterrent (which is why there are no more murders in Texas, for example - oh, wait, maybe there are, hmmm), it has been used more as a way to seek revenge.

Even though the process of appeals and appeals for death row inmates takes years, and drags the emotions of the friends and family of the victims along with them so there is no closure (like you’d get with a nice life term in prison), people will still yell that this somehow is unfair for the families of victims (yes, if they could get away with it, I’d think some would like to bring back stoning).

Given that a life sentence costs less, all those things considered, than the death penalty, you would think the strongest argument against it would be “it saves the state a shitload of money.”

Damn, what a lovely rationale. There’s no take-backsies if you execute the wrong person and there are worse evils serving less time than those on death row just by...what? Luck of a good lawyer - is that ever fair or just?

Nope - and those who actually end up getting executed are almost exclusively low income POC. As with college admissions, it’s all about race, power, and privilege.

Republicans love to complain about people not being put to death because of how much it costs to keep them locked up for life, but when you mention the costs of going through the courts to get through all the appeals, their only answer is “cut the appeal process! Kill ‘em!”.

Because, again, they have that belief that cops and DAs are perfect, juries never make mistakes, and therefore anyone who is in jail is in there rightly, and anyone convicted must be guilty. You know, like the central park 5! (OK, so maybe they didn’t murder that woman, but they weren’t saints, so, you know, kill ‘em!).

I don’t agree with Gavin Newsom about everything, but I am behind him 100% on this.
