I mean he kicked off his campaign at the epicenter of the violence of the Civil Rights struggle. The funny thing is today’s GOP wants nothing to do with Reagan. Can’t understand Republicans that are horrified at Trump’s shit when they endorsed it for years with Reagan. Donald Trump is the final stage of the cancer that Nixon, Pat Buchanan, Lee Atwater and others so proudly helped form & spread over our current political landscape. Fuck them all and especially The Gipper.

They can’t stand Reagan except for the pieces they like. They love him for his view of conservatism and small government, and they like to parade out his ‘tear down this wall’ speech as being a republican grand moment that changed the world. And they love reaganomics and trickle-down, because it keeps the money at the top.

But they can’t stand the rest of him, because they now see him as being way too liberal for the republican party. I mean, he didn’t outright demonize the blacks and the immigrants.

Reagan wasn’t racist enough for today’s Republican Party.

Reagan also presided over, and in some ways enhanced, the AIDS crisis. I think the constant surprise is that so many people uncritically approve of him, much less adore him.

This is just one of his many crimes. But the religious nutjobs loved him for this exact sort of thing.

His blurring of the line of separation between church and state is also worthy of the harshest criticism. He did so many things that molded the current Republican platform to this day.

And Nancy letting the cat out of the bag when she called him from a gathering in Chicago, “Oh Ronnie, I wish you were here to see all those beautiful white people..black and white people, I mean.” Ha, she caught herself and added ‘black’.

I hate Ronald Reagan, that wicked racist bastard, for invading Grenada (“operation urgent fury”). Imagine the most powerful military force invading one of the smallest islands on the planet for absolutely no legit reason other than the usual commie bullshit. Up to this moment the body of our great revolutionary, Maurice Bishop, has not been found. Fuck Ronald Reagan!!!

I honestly thought you were joking about the Nancy quote. But googled it, thinking it was probably just a hyperbolic exaggeration on the truth. Nope! This bish really did say it. And in Chicago of all places!

He was consistent in his policies which unleashed hell on Black folks worldwide. The Grenada thing was unconscionable. I was more than irritated when an older person I knew tried to play the “it’s sad he died” farce. Millions of his victims didn’t get the long, pampered life of wealth and unaccountability he enjoyed.

Ronzo Raygun nominated Jeff Sessions as a federal judge to which a much younger turtle-headed senator stated that sessions was much too racist at that time.

Ronzo Raygun openly opposed congress condemning South Africa’s then apartheid government. He was happy with land-grabbing whites putting blacks in jail forever as long as their countries helped him fight the commie in Angola.

You know, commies who wanted to kick out white colonizers.

TLDR: Here is an appropriate salute to President Reagan from any thinking African-American US citizen:

You spelling his name “Raygun” has triggered me, man (pun not intended but I’ll take it.)

Way back in 1983, my first grade teacher asked us (in Australia) if anyone knew who the American president was.

I got up and wrote on the chalkboard “Donuld Raygun”.

She laughed and laughed and laughed at me, and said no that’s wrong it’s Ronald Reagan.

I remember thinking “Oh, RONALD Raygun.”

    Often-overlooked fact:

Linda Taylor, Reagan’s welfare queen, was (you guessed it!) a grifting white lady.

But that’s okay, GOP, you keep pinning all the blame for white bullshit on everyone else.

Yeah, but that didn’t matter, because, as Michael says, white people think of black folks as being on welfare, not themselves (even when they themselves are on welfare).

Just remember Craig T Nelson whining about all the obama goodies being passed out by the government to help the poor people (read blacks), and how, when he was on welfare/food stamps, he got no government assistance!

Regan did more structural damage to America than just about anyone. The tax reforms he instituted almost 40 years ago led directly to the situation we’re in today.

Throughout the postwar period, median incomes and GDP were essentially linked. As the country did better, the individual households did better. This was done through strong unions/collective bargaining and a progressive tax system with the highest rates at around 70%.

Regan comes along and tries to implement a ‘trickle down’ system to fix something that wasn’t broken, so he dropped the top marginal tax rate 40% and guess what happened? What any 5 year old could tell you would happen...the rich got a lot richer, the country got a lot poorer, and the poor stayed poor.

He also essentially ended public unions (so TSA employees have to work without pay when the Trump’s diaper isn’t changed and he shuts down the government), and greatly reduced the effectiveness of private unions, so then no one was around to complain that most of Walmart’s employees qualify for food stamps.

    Illustration for article titled

And he used dog whistle racism to implement all this. Regan wasn’t taking money away from poor people. He was taking money away from black people. And white people showed they’d rather be poor as long as a colored person was even worse off than they were.

Essentially he was the embodiment of this LBJ quote:

“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

He also helped foster the changes to depression-era banking laws that has led to bigger and bigger (and national) banks, let alone multiple banking crises (after decades of having none).

And the ones who suffer? Those of us not in the upper class.

Regarding AOC, not that anyone on the right will care (for all they see is ‘pretty woman speaking mean about conservatives ergo evil socialist woman... attack!’), but this shows how much she actually does know about politics, history.... you know, stuff.

The information she stated is the kind of info you get from political historians and journalists (shout-out to Michael!), not from politicians themselves (for that would require them to have a brain, think, and study history rather than just worry about power).

Now I understand the fear and loathing the right have of her. She’s not just a pretty face who dances on rooftops and complains about how expensive it is to live in DC when you have no money. She’s an intelligent and strong woman of color.

She’s the living embodiment of everything republicans fear! Like the former first lady, Mrs. Obama, except this one actually has the seat at the table too. I can see why it is their goal to take her down in any way possible.

She did major in international relations and economics at BU. Which is why I always laugh, in a baffled way, when people criticize her economic proposals. No, she’s not a scholarly economist, but she clearly knows more on the issue than most do.

The Gipper was the original Grand Wizard of Collusion. Promising the Ayatollah guns and money in exchange for American lives all to win the 1980 presidency. Then, he sent his lap dog Ollie North to seal the deal but not realizing how inept that guy was only to have the whole thing exposed. All the while feigning ignorance with some bullshit excuse of he can’t remember - because Alzheimers.

FUCK REAGAN WITH A DIRTY DOG’S DICK! HOPE THERE IS A HELL.

My favorite part of the comments on this article is everyone is bringing up issues that Reagan fucked up with his policies, yet there hasn’t been any overlap yet. That’s what a destructive force he was to this country. Whatever perspective you look at our country from, you’ll find something he intentionally ruined/deregulated.

I’ll throw in his dismantling of labor unions. You can’t have trickle down economics if you have to contend with strong labor unions demanding fair wages and healthcare.
