Why wouldn’t we have been excited for Iron Man 3?

It directly followed up on Avengers, and is absolutely one of the best MCU movies.

Well Iron Man 2 wasn't very good imo at least. Controversial opinion as much as I love RDJ since always (Soapdish!), I liked Thor 2 better, mind you I didn't actually like Thor 2 either.

I cannot imagine anyone who hears about a new MCU movie and thinks, “Well, I’d better check those Rotten Tomato scores before I buy a ticket.”

Exactly! Superhero movies are critic proof. Batman VS Superman made $873.6 million.

Well, just came out of the 11:30 3D screening at Disney Springs.

I have been quite vocal about how much I despise the recent iteration of Carol Danvers in the comics.

Civil War 2, especially, but the combination of pushing the character so hard while making her an unlikable dick did a whole lot of damage.

    This movie fixed that.

THIS is the character we should have been getting this whole time, and at least partial credit should go to Kelly Sue Deconnick, the writer who actually knows how to write for Danvers, and who gets a shoutout in the credits.

I refused to hold the comics against her, and rightly so, and if there’s anyone who is hesitant to see this because of the comics, don’t be, it’s fantastic.

And so is the cinematic version of Carol Danvers.

Civil War II was the second worst thing Marvel ever did to Carol Danvers. The absolutely worst thing they ever did to her was have the Avengers let a clearly brainwashed Carol walk off with her child/rapist/kidnapper in Avengers #200.

It would have been wonderful if Alita: Battle Angel got a fraction of the attention of Captain Marvel on this site and io9. Captain Marvel will do more than fine because it’s a Marvel movie set before the biggest Marvel movie in history, and a sequel is all but inevitable regardless of how much press coverage you wring out of every minute aspect of the movie.

Alita on the other hand is an original work not backed up by the awesome might of the largest media corporation in the world and, despite very positive reactions by moviegoers who have actually seen it, will struggle with gaining the box office numbers necessary to justify a well deserved sequel.

How about a little support for movies like this?

Well, not entirely an “original work” given that it’s an adaptation of a manga that already had an anime and video game adaptation. It’s still based on an existing franchise, even if not one as big as Marvel.

      Not exactly...

Sorry son. This one’s also based on a comic book. And it was backed by some small Mom and Pop corporation called 21st Century Fox.

    Two things:

    1. If you’re religiously checking the RT score, aren’t you going to be pop culture saavy enough to know there has been frequent discussion of manipulating the audience scores?

    2. Who actually goes to RT to look at the audience scores? “The new madea movie got 14% on RT, but 27% of audiences liked it... THAT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!”

As for the movie itself, the writing was probably like 35% too Whedon-y for my tastes, especially for Jackson and Larson. Also there were some plot choices that seem to make little sense in the grand scheme of the MCU. Still looking forward to how she’s integrated to Endgame, but Wonder Woman was a better movie (and nothing in this movie would make me think she’s significantly more powerful than Thor or Doctor Strange).

Thor’s powers have ebbed and waned when the movie has called for it. The Thor at the end of Ragnarok who can has full control of his lightning wielding seems to be significantly stronger than the one in Infinity War.... and Strange, with the Eye and his ability to manipulate dimensional... shirt... should be more powerful, but there’s always been a concerted effort in the MCU to scale down the powers in the big team up movies.

The best argument that Carol is the most powerful is that she is <spoilers>

...powered by interacting with the Space Stone...

      <End Spoilers>

but Strange and Vision are both powered by stones as well, so they’d be in that tier as well.

I just like the reminder that “Glass” only succeeded due to its low budget and being released during a dump month when there’s almost no competition. It’s the film-making version of turning in a school paper with wide margins in 16 pt font.

And what stiff competition is Captain Marvel going against? This movie was released on a historically low weekend for box office revenue. It is also the linchpin between a massive story arch of Thanos. With all that said the BEST this movie can do is 160 million opening weekend.....maybe.

To even make it sound good we have to say Captain Marvel is right behind SIX other MCU movies! LMFAO!!! “Well, besides these OTHER SIX movies captain Marvel is kicking ass!!”

That sounds like a paper turned in last minute with 24 point font and double-spaced.  Sorry, this movie should have had a $250-300 million weekend but Lea had to open her fat mouth and people stayed home.  This movie should be pissing gold with no box office competition and being a movie that ties a two part Thanos saga together.  Spin it how you want, this is a failure for an MCU movie that should have been huge.

And this is when you realize how everybody got PLAYED .

    I mean wasn’t it obvious ?

When was the last time a boycott campaign damaged a movie ? let alone a blockbuster .

What was the biggest threat to Captain Marvel ? The trolls that are there anywat for any movie and wouldn t go see it no matter what ? Or the lack of interest from movie goers ?

So lets say you re an executive at marvel and you need to prepare for your new phase with characters that arent well known in a landscape saturated with super heroes . What do you do ? Put all the resources available to put together the best mcu movie to date (and you know that a good movie doesn’t necessarily translate to great boxoffice) or you play it safe by creating interest AROUND the movie and not the ACTUAL movie .

So how do you to that ? Well to sell your product you need to sell an emotion . You have a free resource that will help you and that resource is the internet trolls . They have always been there , they hate everything and are very predictable .

So you throw them a bait “hey look what we got here a FEMINIST movie it would be a shame if insecure man babies went after it”. As expected they take the bait and start the trolling . Then comes the next move “bouhouhou the trolls are after us ...” Now guess what ? Everybody jumps in ...the media ...celebrities ...twitter ...snapchat ....everyone is talking about your movie ! No one is talking about whether it s good or bad but they are talking about the bad people trying to do a bad thing to “THEIR” movie . And that s when the magic happens . The movie that you didn’t even release becomes personal for people who wouldn’t even care about it in the first place .

You turned “go see my movie because it s good” into “go see my movie because you cant let the trolls win” .

At the end of the day the trolls were never going to bring the movie down because they never would have paid to see the movie in the first place but the average person who doesn’t even care about the mcu paid for his ticket.

“The average person who doesn’t even care about the MCU” also doesn’t give a flying fuck about trolls on Rotten Tomatoes reviews, haha.

More importantly...“the average person” in the States does care, at least tangentially, about the MCU as a reliable producer of above-average to very good summer action movies.

But, uh, sure. It was definitely an elaborate false flag operation! The studio that turned the Guardians of the Galaxy into a billion dollar franchise definitely have no idea how to make box office bank out of “characters that arent well known in a landscape saturated with super heroes”!!!

I’m glad the trolls didn’t dent CM’s box-office, but I hope Marvel is listening to the nonpartisan critics who had valid problems with the movie. Just like Dr. Strange, this movie shows the vulnerabilities in Marvel’s filmmaking process. Where Dr. Strange’s main weakness was an over reliance on formula, turning the sorcerer into a by the numbers generic Marvel hero, CM had so many franchise continuity and thematic objectives to fill there was no space to develop a clear character.

This movie is watchable and has some entertaining elements, but its coasting on the history of prior films and fan goodwill. Marvel can’t afford to depend on that as it moves into its new phase.

Bar Iron Man and Guardians, how many of the origin films have been top, top tier? I always give the first film a pass as they get settled and see what works and what doesn’t.

The ability to whiff your first franchise film is unique and won’t last forever for Marvel, as other studios get their act together and figure out what works for their superhero movies.

The latitude fans give Marvel has partially depended on nobody else understanding how to make shared universes and modern superhero films, but that is starting to change. Wonder Woman, Dead Pool, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, Aquaman and even Venom have shown the other studios can compete. Feige is very intelligent and well aware of these challenges, so I am confident Marvel can pivot but the problems still exist.

Not every Marvel origin film top tier, true, but all (except for Dr. Strange and Captain Marvel) have succeeded in introducing an immediately likable, unique lead hero. Captain America:First Avenger, Thor and Ant-Man may not have been perfect films, but most fans and critics agreed that they enjoyed the titular characters, which went a long way towards enjoying the movie.
