I have a guy who mows my lawn every 2 weeks for $35. My trade deficit with that guy is $70 a month because he doesn’t buy anything from me.

To Trump’s mind, I made a ‘bad deal’ because he’s getting cash and I’m not, but that’s not how that shit works. I could save that $70, and bring my trade deficit to zero, by simply doing it myself, but I do not want to. The service is worth more to me than the cash. A trade deficit simply means that the goods we’re getting back are worth more to the country than the cash we pay them. That’s it.

It’s amazing to me that someone can get elected president without even a basic understanding of fundamental principles of economics (or just about anything really).

As you no doubt know, that has a great deal to do with the stupidity (and the psychopathology) of the electorate who wanted that (or, in the most charitable interpretation I can manage, cared more about someone to mirror and enable their xenophobia and racism than they did about someone with a grasp of basic economic principles and/or facts).

Active, deliberate cheating on the candidate’s behalf by a hostile foreign power also helps.

There’s a lot I don’t agree with Rick Wilson about but he goes in hard on Trump and it’s usually hilarious and true.

It costs less to make things in China, period. You know why we have a trade imbalance? Because a lot of old people like Trump have made themselves rich outsourcing production to China.

There’s a crowd of very pissed off soybean and hog farmers in Iowa, but I don’t see them taking off their MAGA hats. Harley-Davidson is moving some production to Europe, but I don’t see any of those Harley-riding dentists taking their MAGA patches off their leather vests. The CATO Institute (not exactly a left-leaning group) has a list of over 200 companies affected by the tariffs. https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/here-are-202-companies-hurt-trumps-tariffs None of the MAGAts say a thing. I think they’re just waiting for Kamala Harris to get elected the day after the economy flushes so they can blame it all on her.

“We have almost an $800 billion a year trade deficit with other nations,” Trump said in November 2017, NPR reports. “Unacceptable. We are going to start whittling that down and as fast as possible.”

    Trumps next tweet...

Promised I would get that 800 million dollar trade deficit down. After 2 years its its only 621 billion! In six more years we will have a SURPLUS!  Lying dems trying to stop me with more witch hunts.  #NoPresidentialHarrassment.

When he finally declares war on <insert country> to distract us from his crimes, no one will remember.
