I’m reporting from NOLA. I celebrated white Mardi Gras, marching with the St Anne Society until we reached the gridlock of the Quarter. Then I skeedaddled back up to our house in the Tremé to look for Mardi Gras Indians. I celebrated Black Mardi Gras at the end of the Zulu parade, which was just as described above, cook outs on the sidelines, tons of kids and prizes, Moon Pies crushed underfoot (seven coconuts for me, thanks very much) Black cowboys and cowgirls on beautiful horses, and many dance squads of sparkly girls. I walked back under the bridge on N. Claiborn and saw Indians galore amidst more cook out and tailgate bars. Eventually I went into Mother in Law’s to watch a brass band play, and a bunch of Indians came in, fully dressed, and proceeded to shake their boogaloos in their suits. I danced my sore crampy feet off. (I physically hurt this morning and my eyes have never been so puffy.)

Anyway, in NOLA you can do Black Mardi Gras and never know all the Bourbon St shennanigans are even going on. Mardi Gras Indians are the best thing going on as far as I am concerned. Monogram Hunters Big Chief was The Prettiest!

I am so glad you covered this. Best Mardi Gras in the world. Period.

YES U CAN!! Born and raised in Mobile and Mardi Gras is my favorite time of the year, hot or cold. Being in a parade is one of the best highs ever! I'll like to throw in that we keep our Christmas trees to decorate for Mardi Gras. Nawlins ain't got shit on ours🎭🎭Laissez Bon Temps Rouler🎭🎭
