      I’d maybe even go a step further...should imsurance fraud really warrant this level of incarceration? It strikes me as a good chance for a minimum security type of scenario.

      She’s also classified by the state as male, despite having undergone multiple surgeries and medical treatments to affirm her gender identity.

      That should be sufficient. Sounds like the hold back is with the State and not with the prison system.

      These posts have crazy and depressing comment threads because a lot of people are hateful trash, but The Root does a really good job of representing the stories of trans POC. Foregrounding that identity on a more general-interest site may make a difference in the long run, integrating trans content into the mainstream. But bigots will bigot.

      I love that you write off anyone that doesn’t agree with you 100% as a bigot. You know, like a bigot would. You can be respectful to all people, trans or not, and not believe that you can actually escape your own biology. I didn’t create science, but FEELING like something doesn’t make you that thing scientifically.

      They are clearly doing certain things solely to be assholes here, but don’t you see the potential for things to get out of hand and become a logistical nightmare of transfers if any prisoner can say that they’ve been a woman inside their entire life and need to be transferred to a woman’s prison? If you want to be fair to all you can’t tell some guy that looks like Clint Eastwood that he’s less of a woman than a person already on hormone therapy. If the rule fits for one, it fits for all. Since this issue is all based on feel and not something you can test for, literally any inmate could claim it.

      I know that is a tired argument marched out for bathroom laws too (Which are insane to me. I believe in one bathroom for all.) That being admitted, prison is far different from public restrooms. It’s apples and oranges. One requires prisoners being physically moved. One requires Conservatives to not be assholes. I would support a separate area for trans inmates or even a trans exclusive prison. I can’t get behind putting any biologically male prisoner that claims they are female being put in gen pop with non trans women.  Just can’t, doesn’t mean I hold anything but respect and empathy for those people and what they go through.

    This is disgusting and horrifically racist/sexist/transphobic treatment but it is typical and standard treatment of black trans women in prisons. This is also a reflection of how the state would treat all trans people, if they had their way.

    This is deliberate cruelty which, sadly, is typical of the american penal system. If she still had a penis there would be reason for caution, but no, she’s post-op, FFS. Putting her in a men’s prison is like throwing red meat to a pack of stray dogs.

    Also, ten years for insurance fraud?  WTFO?

    It doesn’t matter what you think you are... or what you want to become...if you were born with male genitalia, you’re a freaking man! If you were born with female genitals... you are a woman! HE should not be moved to a women’s prison because HE is NOT A WOMAN.... Period. Smh... I can pretend to be a butterfly all damn day but I’ll never be a butterfly because biologically... I wasn’t born to be a butterfly. It’s simple science. This doesn’t make me homophobic.. or hateful (I’m sure those responses are coming)... I’m a person who accepts my born gender. I don’t understand what the problem is with that.

      That is correct, it actually makes you transphobic. If I really want to gripe, I would also say a bit ignorant if the belief is that pretending to be a butterfly is on par with being trans.

      There has been a century of research that suggests that sex isn’t as “simple science” as genitalia and that biologically, sex should really be more of a spectrum between points rather than a hard “1" or “0". In this case, trans people would generally sit on the spectrum between that 1 or 0.

      So yeah...the science isn’t all that simple.

      Also, Since you want to throw research into this, there is also a ton of research that suggests homosexuality is a mental disorder. Up until the 1970's is was classified as such in the AMA journal with a diagnosis code.

    This is so, so horrifying. Think about all the special accommodations white-collar inmates receive routinely. Prisons are the rawest, most immoral direct reflections of American inequality and punitive racism. Her treatment here is torture, full stop. How is this different from making prisoners at Abu Ghraib pose in sexually humiliating positions? This is making a spectacle of the state’s power to rescind a person’s humanity and perform violence at will.
