According to local news sources the motive involved participation in a cult. The half-sister of the youngest victims said that the mother and the oldest daughter had become involved with a cult they had connected with online. She knew things had deteriorated in the home, but did not anticipate something like this. However, the family was under the supervision of DHS and so that speaks to a family obvious crisis.

According to police, the mother and daughter claimed all of the victims died willingly as part of a murder-suicide pact pertaining to the aforementioned (but yet to be named) cult and that the mother and daughter planned on killing themselves.

Of course, at this point there is no way of knowing if the cult even existed or if it was merely a delusion of the part of the murderers. I think it is safe to say that mental illness played a significant role [The talk of demons and other hyper-religious delusions, the rapid deterioration of conditions in the home and the decisions to isolate themselves from the outside world reminds me of my experience with a family member in the midst of uncontrolled bipolar disorder] and I wonder if this is something of a folie à deux between the mother and oldest daughter.
