I say Toni because she has been in the black community for decades and Lori has not. Lori’s outreach to black folks has been weak. I like her for certain. But I’m just not certain where her allegiance is....and how effective she can be. Toni has been in the trenches and is not afraid to speak truth to power—white men! And it’s gonna be real interesting to see who the white folks suck up to now since they poured millions into a white male candidate’s coffers only to come up short!!

This is going to be a tough one, for real. I really only read the city paper (Sun Times, who endorsed Lightfoot, btw) because I live in the city, but Lightfoot pulled more votes than Preckwinkle, which shocked the shit out of me. I figured she’d run third to Daley’s second and Preckwinkle’s first-place finish. I like them both plenty, but I think Lightfoot has a real shot, which is both awesome and terrifying to me at the same damn time.

Lightfoot did well in the diverse liberal lakefront wards on the north side, where I live. In my 48th ward, she blew Toni away ~4500 votes against 2460, with Daly getting around 1600.

Great recap, but Toni Preckwinkle isn’t the ‘school board president’ she is president of the Cook County Board - think of her current position as ‘mayor of Cook County,’ so to speak. Outside of the city mayor, she’s already ridiculously powerful since of course, Cook is the largest county in the state.

It’s hard to not be cynical about politicians in Chicago, so it’s nice that we at least have diversity as a plus on this one. And we sure as shit didn’t need another Daley, at least not know.

It warms my petty little heart that Daley didn’t make it into the runoff.

You’re not being petty, just celebrating some unexpected wisdom from the electorate.

Preckwinkle and Lightfoot sound like a folk band duo.

I’m never shocked anymore, but the amount of white dudes I saw rendering their tunics over the fact that Daley lost was fascinating; their complete lack of self-awareness is stunning. After Rahm, the last thing I’d want is to go back to a Daley. Thank god that family didn’t get in the run-off.

Preckwinkle, the Cook County school board president and chairwoman of the county’s Democratic Party, came in with 16 percent.

Preckwinkle is the President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, usually simplified to Cook County Board President.
