Well said about how Newark looks at New York. I also know how New York looks at Newark as some rural backwater, to the point where people would rather drive to DC then hang out there. Fools.

Love the piece.  My one beef is that you’re stretching with George Clinton and J.R. Smith.  George is from Plainfield, and that’s a solid half hour away.  J.R. Smith is from the Jersey Shore (which is low key the Blackest part of America no one knows about), but at least he took the train up there to go to high school.  Saint Benedict’s Prep rolls DEEP in Jersey.

Newark is indeed no joke. It has a become a center of commerce and transportation. From the light rail that runs through it’s business district, to the Prudential Center which hosts Seton Hall Basketball, The NJ Devils and recently The Atlantic 10 tournament and it is home to Prudential Headquarters, Standard Chartered Bank and Broadridge Financial, Newark, NJ is growing in it’s importance. You know it’s become a target for gentrification when you see white people shopping downtown on Saturday’s.

Every year downtown starts to look more and more like NY, and with that comes gentrification which i am dreading. Right now a majority of white skinned people are packed in the east ward I really hope they stay here. They definitely are trying to move the few black people still in the east ward out.

I taught high school math in Newark, but I was always way too busy to really explore the city very much.  The teaching was really tough, and it was at one of those Zuckerberg schools.  I think that Jersey City has surpassed Newark in terms of population at least.

I’ve always been fascinated that Bricks changed the name Southside High to Shabazz High after Malcolm X considering that his alleged killers came out of a Newark based Mosque.

Right, and how in the world is it a 12 minute train ride?
