The problem with that focus is that people usually don’t want that the whole society has a benefit.

That’s why healthcare is a mess in this country.

This mindset is so puzzling to me.

That’s only one problem of that focus.

Another is the fact that the U.S has never properly atoned for the hundreds of years of holding Africans as property. There was no punishment for those who upheld the practice or those who went to war over it. There were no damages paid to those effected by it. In fact, little changed for former slaves for a very very long time after.

Do people imagine sharecroppers had things any better than slaves? Not like they could report landowners abuses to the cops or courts. What about the Black Codes? White people used any half excuse to imprison black folks to use as forced labor.

Allowing us to refer to ourselves as African American after a long bloody Civil Rights struggle (that continues even today), doesn’t come close to righting the wrongs committed.

Other countries tend to take a long hard look at terrible eras of their history and take definitive action. After WWW II, Germany had commissions, trials, people were executed, buildings destroyed, laws changed. Iirc it is *still* against the law to name one’s child Adolf Hitler. Other countries have taken similar steps.

Not the U.S. We only half assed Reconstruction. An effort which not at all focused on helping former slaves.

Until this country faces this original sin head-on, it will never look at African Americans as equal. It just won’t.

That is one of the things that reparations would finally do.

Not that I expect a single dime to ever be paid...

**P.S. this reads a bit more forceful than I’d intended it to. That’s not directed at you...

The mindset is that if someone else benefits and they don’t, then they must be the ones paying for that benefit. And they don’t want to.

I’m so aggravated about the answers given to the “Reparations” question. Except for Mariann Williamson who proposed $100 Billion in reparations to #ADOS:

All of the other politicians, but especially Kamala Harris who has been asked numerous times, dodge this issue with either platitudes, a history of slavery, and word salad. They never give a concrete detail of any proposed policy.

I’m not falling for it. Neither should you.

FFS, pick a policy Ms. Harris and don’t give me this “A rising tide lifts all boats” b.s. metaphor. Policies designed to help “everyone” always seem to leave out black folks during implementation.

So please Bernie, Kamala, Tulsi, Jaquin, Elizabeth, Corey, etc... pick a goddam policy for reparations. I’ll start a list that you can choose from:

    1. Cash money payment
    2. A new bank made soley for #ADOS with 0-2% interest (Fed) rates with no money down for Black farms, homes, and small business loans
    3. New investments in HBCU’s
    4. Expanding federal contracts for #ADOS
    5. New investments in neglected public schools in black neighborhoods
    6. Reserving a portion of public lands for black business construction
    7. Tax incentives for companies to hire #ADOS

Y’all help me out.  These politicians keep talking, but I’m hearing 0 solutions.

I’m no economist, but it seems to me like a cash money (with no tax strings) option is the one that is least likely to be fucked with. Anything with a long term implementation will become fodder for the fucking bullshit political theater, just like the ACA became, and will eventually get watered down to the point of diminishing returns.

Again though, I’m no economist and wouldn’t have the numbers or theories to back up that assumption, and as an old poor white guy, would not be helped or hurt except in that everyone wins in a more just and more equal society.

      Great comment.

      1. Won’t ever happen for a thousand reasons.

The rest could and should. All of them. No choosing.

You have to be careful talking reparations, because you know white people will sooner or later demand that they should be reimbursed for the property that their ancestors owned and was taken from them by the emancipation proclamatiOn and the 13th amendment.

And you know they’d get the money before any blacks do...

Great interview, Polite yet substantial questions.

Hope you get to interview more Presidential nominees with the same level of questioning.

Sen. Harris has some good barbed statements about Trump, reminding people about his statements on African countries, That he lost the popular vote, dropping his title, nothing that screams headline, but that overtime would eat at that President in Name Ompa loompa’s ego.

I can see why he’s been ducking her.

Which is why I think she’s the best candidate so far. The only other person who is as antagonistic towards Trump and doesn’t end up looking a fool is Sanders but unlike him, her policy isn’t scorched earth. She is too grown to engage Republicans on non-starters and also has the track record of being able to get things done.

Our community lacks access to credit, business ownership, land/home ownership (a.k.a. - wealth).

My quick proposal for Reparations, that could actually pass Congress:

I propose setting up a new federal bank with a $1 Trillion lend limit from the Fed at half the current rate to 1.15% and charge #ADOS farmers, businesses, and homeowners up to 2% interest on their loans and credit refinancing. We then have a program that targets renters, educates them, and mobilizes them to purchase homes.

If we can get #ADOS into low interest rate mortgages/loans with 0% down, it would instantly incentivize and increase home ownership, wealth, and collateral for us to leverage for other loans to open businesses and farms.

Credit is needed to own and run any business.  Credit is a power we have been stripped of.

This proposal, while exclusive to #ADOS, would be hard to spin (by nay-sayers) as a tax on the American people, because these are loans that will be paid back.

Feel free to critique this idea.

Sounds like a good start. I’ll bet Kamala Harris would support this idea.

The interest rates don’t keep up with inflation. It would be a net negative that would have to be offset by the tax revenue generated by subsequent economic activity generated by the black community.

“Listen, the reality is also this: any policy that will benefit black people, will benefit all of society. Let’s be clear about that. Let’s really be clear about that. So, I’m not gonna sit here and say I’m going to do something that only benefits black people. No. because whatever benefits that black family will benefit that community and society as a whole and the country.”

Is it a bad thing that she is selling reparations this way? She isn’t wrong. Helping out the black community will benefit everybody overall. Wording it this way will make it more palpable to those who think, “Why only black people, what about Native Americans?” Kamala is a smart cookie. Sounds like she will say whatever she needs to say to make it a reality, and in politics, that is very important.

Is Midwest really a thing? Or are we just talking anti-progressive white people who’s minds can’t change, and therefore why bother? She ain’t gonna win on this alone, doesn’t mean it’s gonna hurt her.

Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and Ohio are a thing. Ask Hillary. Yeah they don’t care about progressive politics, their white sensibilities trigger real easy, but they need to be brought in or its Trump until 2024. If that means pandering to them, than please someone pander to them all day long. Everyone needs to understand how profoundly easy it is for a Democrat to win the popular vote by millions, and lose the electoral college by half a dozen states.
