It is amazing how little mainstream music is changing these days. And by these days, I mean the last 20 years.

No, I’m not talking minor changes. From the 1960s to the 1990s, music changed faster and more radically than anyone born in the 1980 can imagine.

Now we seem stuck on variations of the same old same old or listening to what we called back then “oldies”.

It’s not just music. I recently picked up Hulu and I’m six seasons into ER. Other than the lack of cell phones, some mentions of Y2K, a LOT of AIDs storylines, and a small handful of haircuts (you won’t see them on tv but they are still popular on real people) there is nothing to indicate it was filmed 20 years ago. It’s really weird.

I think it’s a good thing in some respects though. Mainstream cultural shifts are no longer about women wearing pants or having jobs or alternative family structures. We have been focusing as a whole on shit that’s just way more important. One interesting thing, despite their best efforts to roll us back-abortion access and rights have held steady in the face of assassinations and TRAP laws. On the bad side, the racial issues particularly in regards to cops and health care workers haven’t changed a bit.

If music and entertainment media is stagnating because our plates are full working on stuff like civil rights and ending state sanctioned abuse and murder...well I’m okay with that.

Good points, but why isn’t MSE reflecting this? That’s how it usually works.

      Or used to work.

The only thing more painful than the album covers of that era were the “comedy” skits in between the tracks.

I like that the video doesn’t just focus on video vixens twerking but rather features a lot of women who are dressed in everyday clothes and who represent more realistic beauty standards having fun dancing.

Yeah, I think this track is pretty much when Cash Money kicked No Limit off the “NOLA rap” throne...

This is absolutely brilliant.  It's both true and satirical.  Back that Azz Up is masterful, and you absolutely hammered the nonsense of those "20 years since Slim Shady" and "20 years since Office Space" Think pieces.
