There is something to be said for teenagers being shitty and immature and not knowing the consequences of their actions...but the whole point is that when you do get in trouble and suffer the consequences of your abject shittiness, you learn from those mistakes and become a well adjusted member of society.

What these writers are advocating, and what this kid’s asshole parents are saying, is *he shouldn’t have to learn a lesson*. He shouldn’t have to suffer the embarrassment. He just made a mistake! How can one boy be defined by one mistake!?!

How many people of color end up with felony and misdemeanor convictions that follow them forever for one mistake? We are not afforded the luxury of not having our mistakes (let alone the mistakes of other people who's only tangible similarity to us is the same-ish skin tone) define us for our whole lives, and we don't get to file multi-million dollar law suits to argue they shouldn't, either.

They are not just saying *he shouldn’t have to learn a lesson*. They are saying that *he should gain from his mistake*. The kid was a jerk and is now going to be a rich jerk. It’s some f-ed up universe where apparently “the worst thing that ever happened to him” is really, “the best thing that ever happened to him.”

My parents sent me to Catholic School because the public schools in my neighbor were not teaching shit. I was one of two black students grades 1-8. And the only-only in high school.

I was a brilliant student throughout. Hell, on high school graduation day, I was awarded a plaque for being an “Outstanding Negro Student”. I don’t mean to brag, but the bar was pretty high because I was running against myself.

This total immersion in schoolhouse Whitelandia taught me that the majority of white people are mediocre at best.

Hate to break it to you, but the sad reality is that almost all people are mediocre at best. Note that I am not arguing your point, but the more time you spend in more communities of different types of people, the more you realize that people really aren’t all that special, irrespective of their color.

That’s why Mike’s point is so well-taken, for me anyways. People typically aren’t exceptional, but because white people don’t face barriers based on their immutable characteristics, they only need to be about half as capable to get twice as far.

“White privilege is the absence of racism”

That is it. That is the distilled pill-form quote.

Exactly.  Some people might require the whole article, but really, anyone that stops to think about it should get it from that right there.

Those articles in USA Today were salt in a gaping wound that has been opened by police, people like George Zimmerman, Permit Patty, the fucking bitch ass president(one more time lower case intentional) and too many more to mention. The lawsuit is just one more log on a fire of indignity that will burn until the end of time. I hope that under those articles those two got their asses handed to them, but I know better.

You can always hand them out. Forward links.

That doesn’t force them, but it does encourage them.

(And you can quiz them afterwards and sometimes shame them into doing it later if they’ve flaked and haven’t done it.)

One of those things has to be true. Because if Powers of Strauss believed their bullshit attempts at proactively pardoning all white kids, while watching black children receive a perpetual kick in the teeth, they wouldn’t have time to apologize...

They would be too busy burning this whole motherfucker to the ground.
