Those menus are a Sakurai signature, going back at least as far as Kirby Air Ride. I’ll thank you not to besmirch such a beloved institution!

Wasn’t Sakurai’s wife behind the designs of those controversial menu layouts?

Well, no matter, Ultimate’s menus are far better than the past iterations. Sakurai apparently himself acknowledged the flak to the point he actually advertised the menu layout.

I mean, smash has historically been the best example of how NOT to do UI design, so really, it's only fitting...

I don’t consider these very helpful, actually. What I loved about Dragon Ball FighterZ is that its tutorials were done right in the game itself. I learn much better through practical application.

Arc Sys does great tutorials! See Guilty Gear Xrd for another example.

Guilty Gear Xrd has such a ridiculously good tutorial for a fighting game.

It’s kinda embarrassing for any other fighting game developer.

All you have to do is wait on the title screen and the Tutorials play automatically. IIRC it has been this way for a while, I feel like the tutorial is almost exactly the same as it was on the old smash games. It felt really familiar.

It’s barely changed since the first game.

They changed it from Mario vs Luigi to Mario vs Bowser in Melee and added references to new moves later to and Final Smashes but have otherwise been pretty consistent in terms of animation and description.

The game already contains in its Help menu sections “Techniques” for basic stuff like controls and techniques(with videos) and “Move List”. Those already give you the essentials.
Tips is separate because it’s meant for short tips that appear during loading screens. Sometimes they are same as in the“Move List” and sometimes they can contain some info that move list can’t cover it because it isn’t essential knowledge for people starting characters/or it just doesn’t fit.
Also that “How to play” movie can also be seen in title screen if you idle there for about 10 seconds. That’s what it is meant for.

I spent an embarrassingly long time trying to figure this out on launch day.

ditto... would have been helpful to know that they assigned the smash moves to the right joystick out of the gate. I figured it out totally by accident, and it changed my experience entirely.

It’s kind of surprising that Nintendo’s notorious hand-holding didn’t make it to this game.

The funny thing about the move list? Is the fact that it solely focuses on the special button (B by default) moves. The A button is no where to be found.

Nor does the move list(which can also be found when you pause the game) mention the basics like how tilting the joystick far enough left or right will make you run.

I know this is OT but why do you think they designed the Splatoon stage that way?

There are these directly overlapping ramps which you must jump through as you can’t walk up or down them. So as a result you go through them and must jump to get to the higher ramp. Which is fine I guess but then there’s the fact that everything is really 3D?

So the ramps should be like they are in Splatoons 1 and 2, which is side by side but connected.

Neither one of those mention Inkling’s unique ability to recharge the Ink by pressing Shield + B.

Too bad that no where in all that does it tell you how to drop/throw items. After 10+mins digging through various areas in the game in search for game basics, I had to go to a fansite to get a full listing of controls.

It’s not bad, you just let the game idle on the title screen until it plays. It’s the same as all the past smash bros games.
