    This rumor has been around for a while in the astronomy community. Was at a conference with him at one point and he seemed to like the attention of undergrad women far too much. Former UT prof also told me the person who accused him of rape he viewed as credible. Glad the investigation is happening

      I wouldn’t say this is an indication of stupidity, given that there were no consequences for this behavior in until very recently. In fact being able to behave in this manner was probably a large part of the motivation for a lot of these men to become powerful and or famous in the first place.

    You know what always gets me about these allegations? These guys can usually rack up a pretty high notch count on their bedpost without a drop of coercion. Of course, this means that this isn’t about sex, it’s about exerting power over others, but that doesn’t make it any more frustrating.

    Not that I’m condemning the man already (but three separate people have decided to be eternally abused by the internet to call him out, so that’s pretty damning).

      It’s like you said - it’s not about sex at all, but about power. Sex is only the medium to channel this particular kind of power. While there are many forms of power (financial, political), none is more personal, direct and intimate than invading someone else’s personal space and violating their physical agency.

      See also: Trump, Weinstein, Spacey, Clinton etc.

      Besides the predatorial aspect of their assaults, these men are also fundamentally lazy and entitled. “I’m the center of the universe and I deserve this.” Why put in any effort to woo a woman in a (con)sensual way when they can just take what they want without repercussion, anyway?

      If you’re a star, they let you do it. “They”, of course, is not the individual woman whose choice is removed by threat and coercion, but our still overwhelmingly male-dominated society in which rich and powerful men thrive off the indifference and cowardice of other men.

      Is there a single #metoo case where a male bystander came forward? No, it only ever became known when the victims themselves went public.

    Well, sh*t. There’s a rising tide of conservative religion, superstition and anti-science in this country. Science needs charismatic spokespeople who are enthusiastic about outreach to combat it (a lot of us are introverted nerds who just want to be left alone in our labs). He was one of the best at this. But, if he was doing this stuff....man, this sucks.

      The word wasn’t out. The rumor was. Unless y’all were personally involved or there is hard evidence, I really don’t think it’s anybody's right to comment. And that is for your protection as well, because if you've never had a wild accusation thrown at you for somebody else's gain, it is hell. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. The court of public opinion has gotten out of control and I see nobody trying to hold it back.
