I give him credit for walking the razor’s edge. Black Republicans who fail, fail HARD, and he’s doing the least he can to keep from venturing into Uncle Ruckus territory. He knows he can’t step-and-fetch 100% of the time or else he’ll never be able to confidently say, “I got mine.”

He’s already there. Along with Clarence Thomas, Omarosa, Stacy Dash, Mia Love, Ben Carson and Clarence Thomas.

Holy shit what is going on in that lead image? Tim Scott’s hand is not only on top but this photo was taken with him at Trump’s right hand side. This is all an interesting look at body language.

You always position yourself so the person you are shaking hands with is on the left. That way it looks as if you are leading the person.

The over under paradigm is what people use to manipulate feelings. People who stretch out over hand are signaling they are in charge and tehy dominate the issues and conversation and atmosphere.

When they reach under it signals that they are here to help listen and back the person they are greeting or working with and that person holds the power so to speak.

However most people who intentionally reach underhanded are looking to manipulate and put at ease someone in order to work them.

If scott was smart he’d take a second to force it equal sides and signal the message that we’re all equals here.

I’m in South Carolina and I’m not sure how to feel about Tim Scott. He seems to really believe in the bootstraps and all that, which would make me think he’s naive. But his various statements show some understanding that it’s a more complex situation than individual bias. And he had to be playing ball for the party supporting Trump. He doesn’t seem like a cynical opportunist or a wide-eyed idealist. If he's just calling 'em as he sees 'em then he needs to look harder.

I know what I feel about him. Doing the right thing every once in awhile does not a good Senator make. On net - and it’s not even really that close - Tim Scott is your typical conservative Republican upholding white supremacy. I don’t have much internal turmoil about what I think of him.  He’s far from the only Republican who breaks with the president from time-to-time.

Oh I’ve got no qualms voting against him, just wondering what makes him tick. He doesn’t give off the phony preacher vibes I typically associate with black conservatives in Trump’s orbit. Maybe he's just a good actor.

I just don’t understand republicans. Of all the people they could nominate who believe their worldview of ‘states rights’ and ‘well, race isn’t really a factor, so it’s not a civil rights violation’, they go off and push for people who are fully unqualified for these roles, and then defend them like they’re the greatest lawyers/judges the planet has ever seen.

It’s almost like they’re saying “We know these guys are crappy people, but they’re OUR crappy people and we’re going to put them on the court because we can!”

What does he want, a cookie? Fuck Tim Scott.

This punk politician still votes with Trump initiatives and general republican legislation 96.2% of the damn time.

Same with Jeff Flake at 84%. Fuck him too. Hell Flake’s record of dissension is better than Tim Scott’s! Still doesn’t excuse or condone Flake’s flaky ass.

    But come on here!

Two years ago, Scott chose his party over racial equality when he was comfortable talking up Trump in the general election. Today, he is doing the reverse. It’s the second time he has stopped a nominee with egregious racial baggage from being named to the federal bench.

But, but, there are a lot of Americans with egregious racial baggage. Don’t they deserve representation in our court system?!?

(Yes, this is an homage. Re President Nixon’s failed nomination of G. Harrold Carswell to replace the excellent Abe Fortas: “Some senators rallied to his defense but in a rather unhelpful way. ‘Even if he is mediocre,’ Republican Sen. Roman Hruska of Nebraska famously argued, ‘there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers, and they are entitled to a little representation, aren’t they?’”)

Like Isaac, I will give Scott credit for actually voting no. This is better than Bob Corker who talked the talk but never walked the walk. All he did was resign and give us Marsha Blackburn in return. Ted Cruz will have some competition come January.

Scott has to walk that edge. I’m still surprised he got elected after Haley’s appointment of him. South Carolina is well...South Carolina. Scott can’t cross Trump too many times, or he’ll be primaried out next election.

Most Presidents would just nominate someone else. But, Isaac’s right. Trump will renominate Farr again next year just to prove a point. Trump will no longer need Tim Scott. The new Senator Scott from Florida will vote to confirm. Damn.

Why did it take so long? If I had to venture a guess, it would be that this is a transparent attempt to get attention. Holding up votes is some of the worst type of political theater but it raises a Congressperson’s profile so any chance they get to do it, they take it.

95% chance he was seeing what sort of deals would be offered for his vote. Either genuinely fishing or just to see what was in the water.
