I want to know who you’re referring to, but not sure that I should ask.

    Two thoughts:

    1. People aren’t as worried about DJT ‘grabbing their guns’ than they were/would be if a Democrat was president, thus they feel less anxious about their gun rights, and less donate-happy. It doesn’t surprise me a bit that NRA income was high before last presidential election.

    2. Reasonable people are sick of mass shootings, and are in fact more flexible than ‘slippery slope’ NRA wants them to be. No one in their right mind wants massive school shootings, church shootings, nightclub shootings, even country music festival shootings.

I live in Texas and just about every person I know has a gun in the house (mostly hunting rifles and shotguns, but still), and thinks the NRA has come completely off the rails. Its leadership has so convinced itself of the slippery slope theory that the organization can’t bring itself to endorse (or even stay silent on) even the most basic of reforms.  Bump stocks, high capacity magazines - it’s in the Constitution!

hand grenades, tanks, missile launchers, battleships, nukes. You ban nukes and the next thing you know, you won’t have a gun to your name...

Roughly speaking: dues are $45/year, that’s fewer than 3 million members. Or under 1% of the population.   That is an outsized effect on politics.

The NRA isn’t advancing the interest of the dues paying members.  They’re advancing the interests of the gun manufacturers that donate.

I guarantee you the NRA will become a federal agency, with funding and a cabinet position, by 2020.

Under the argument of a need to have a cabinet position specifically designed to protect our rights under the constitution.

Then when someone asks for a cabinet position to protect the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, ninth, fourteenth, etc., we’ll be told the gov’t does that anyway, no need for a cabinet position on that. Oh, and your press credentials are now pulled.

What happened with all the “NRA laundering money for the Russians” news? That seems like forever ago.  Was that debunked or is that yet another money trail that Mueller is following?  Roo will know.

Perhaps the NRA should have stayed in their lane and just dealt with guns and gun safety and stayed out of politics.

Love this, but some notes from a Finance person:

    1) the Daily Beast did “get” the returns, but they are in the public domain. The forms were not leaked to them, they googled it, The NRA is a non-profit, they have to disclose their form 990.

    2) I would really like to see the revenue difference between membership dues and corporate dues, as it looks like those are muddled together, though they would indicate different things.

    3) They still have $24MM in the bank after losing that money in 2017. Yeah.

    4) When I joined a gun club (yes, I shoot) I was offered a membership to the NRA for 1 or 5 dollars... I did not join, but I do know that they give away year one membership like candy.

Oh, wait, this is not the time we should be discussing these issues. That should be saved for a later time, as we still are looking for answers and mourning the empty coffers at the NRA.

I’m going to hate and see what their funding looks like when they can’t get any of that sweet Russian money anymore.
