Unless you kill somebody, nobody should get jail time for a speeding ticket. I know she was really in trouble for missing her court date but what the fuck people. There is got to be a better way to do this shit. It probably cost more to jail her than the fines would ever amount to.

Going 120 mph is putting lives in danger. Throw high speeders in jail.

I think that may be the point. The court, the prosecutor, the police and the guards will all get their cut. It pays to sick the criminal justice system on black people.

Counties now depend on this type of bullshiat. Don’t let you have a mental illness, they will get you. I went to Cook County jail for 3 days in 04', and this very old, clearly dementia having man was in there for 45 days................for a farking trespass charge, that’s normally a 24 hour lock up inside of your precinct’s jail/police station.

Their new lick is getting released state inmates who get out to pay $1000, even if they never had a traffic case on their record.

What happens if these folks can’t pay? I can’t imagine many of them have a grand in cash lying around unused.

First: find a GoFundMe so I can send sis some cash (the Root has cost me dollars in the last 2 years)

2nd: Leave St. Louis. Settle in another state if possible and pay an attorney from a different jurisdiction to handle it. If possible.

3rd: NAACP has limited influence these days - unfortunately - but they get their travel advisories correct. They stated in no uncertain terms: St. Louis and Missouri are no bueno for Black folk. I have had no very few reasons to change my view of the state. Or Alabama. Or Georgia. Or Florida. Or Mississippi....

First off, never waste your money on a lawyer for traffic violations. They are fucking worthless.

Second, she needs to contact both ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center.

BS. A lawyer is going to get you a much better deal unless you know how to work the system and the system allows you to work them. I’m a middle age white guy but I know what to do. Even if you’re me, you show up to do your thing and you wait two hours. Lawyers go first and you don’t have to show. I can spend $120 and get a $50 fine or I can spend $0, 3 hours and get a $120 fine.

If you personally know the judge and the ADA an attorney will provide no benefit.  Otherwise you’re just wrong.

When you’re pulled over for doing 120, it’s not a traffic violation in any meaningful sense. That’s a criminal charge, so you should absolutely hire a lawyer.

I’ve gotten one speeding ticket in my life, in spite of being pulled over countless times for DWB (and if you want to know why, I was on vacation and thought the limit was 45 on a road instead of 35). Got a lawyer so I could get it taken care of and wouldn’t have to appear in court. Now thank God I was at college and didn’t really drive at the time, because about 6 months later I came home to renew my license and was told it was suspended for missing court and not paying my speeding fine. Turns out the court had misfiled my paperwork.

I can only imagine what would have happened if I had driven normally during that time.

This isn’t new for Missouri. It’s been this way for a long time. It’s one of those states that believes in jailing everyone (well, everyone of color, maybe) for everything, and if you can’t afford bail, so be it.

This is, by definition, a debtors prison.

They have no concern in the people actually deserving jail time, or trying to better themselves. They want their money and time, regardless if it ruins your life and maybe leads you to end up going on to a life of crime. Ain’t their problem.

Okay, my first thought in the middle of reading this was: she wasn’t arrested on the spot for reckless driving, for driving 120 MPH? Where I live, white privilege or no white privilege, such a driver would be immediately arrested.

Okay, let’s look past this. I also assume for the sake of argument that the speeding ticket is not being contested in this instance. (I do not automatically assume that such an accused driver is guilty. There is a great deal of error, and fraud, in traffic enforcement.)

Her treatment is circular, cyclical and abusive.

    Excellent summary.

Now, here’s the magic question: who benefits from this status quo? Hint for lurkers: she doesn’t, nor do others in her situation.

It’s expensive to be poor in this country.

I know affluent car enthusiasts who have gotten tickets like this. 120 in a 70 mph zone is arguably reckless driving, but throw enough money and lawyers at it, and you can usually get off with a heavy fine and probation. Friend of mine (Asian man) got caught doing 138 in a 70 in Nevada. Cost him a few thousand in fines and fees, but he could afford it. But he sure didn’t hire a $300 lawyer to show up and nod at the judge.

I was expecting to read about someone going 10 or 15 miles over the speed limit, but 120 in a 70 zone. Come on. Unless it’s a life and death rush to the emergency room, there is zero reason to drive that fast. At that speed, you are risking lives. As for as I’m concern, driving over 100 should be automatic jail time.
