No no. We’ve tried the “anyone can be a politician” experiment and it proved to be dead wrong. He has no business being mayor of Sacramento.

    No. Just no.

Like, any eligible person should be able to run, but that doesn’t mean that they should. Candidates like him make a bigger mockery of the system than it already is.

But, mostly, I’m just worried about him, because he’s very obviously not completely well. This “campaign” ends well for no one. Even if he gets totally well, he still needs to go educate himself, and even then he’d be better starting out running for school board or something.

Been to council meetings in small town of 1000..mostly you got to be able to hold your tongue without looking to stupid. Pick your battles.

I think the family would do well and take a chunk of the settlement they will be receiving and establish a resource center in the family’s loved ones name...

He can’t have any love for Sac if he plans on leaving if he doesn’t get his way. The best thing he can do to honor his brother is get healthy...

I hope this kid has a good shot - it sounds like he has some great ideas, especially that a city should be governed and policed by home-grown folks who know the neighborhoods, positives, and negatives of living in the city.

Unfortunately, a lot of people will mostly remember him as the guy who jumped up on the table at the city council meeting and told the mayor to shut up. While I totally understand why he did that (grief is an extremely strong influence), there are all too many folks in Sac who will let that cloud their perception of what he is working toward these days.

When a loved one is in the hospital, staff often asks for a Family Spokesperson to relay medical information to everyone (freeing the staff from repeating things to multiple members). Having endured decades of local tv news showcasing toothless, doo-ragged/head-wrapped ignant folks to provide on-scene commentary on too many tragedies, enough! Worry, anxiety, and grief are horrible emotions to navigate in the moment of tragedy. So please, for the love of God, decide NOW, who and how you will handle press in the event of a tragedy!

Defer all interviews until you can have a formal family meeting! Elect the most educated and eloquent spokesperson to convey your family’s sentiments. Decide what pictures will be released, who will freeze/delete social media, and what specific, realistic remedies you want enacted short and long-term. Families, get your people together! Do not allow anyone and everyone to wear, say and do whatever comes to mind!

Rosa Parks, MLK and the SCLC and all the Black organizations fighting for Civil Rights did NOT send just anybody out to speak to the press! It’s been 50 years now! We ARE SMARTER THAN THIS!

He has so, so, so much work to do on himself before he can help others.  And, no, you don’t start out in politics running for mayor.  Just, no.  He needs better people in his life.

Unfortunately, with imagery like the photo above, and the videos of him venting after the loss of his brother, it is unspeakably difficult for him to get past that and even have a chance at holding office anywhere. Not impossible, but certainly that much more difficult, because he gave them exactly what they wanted—potent, painful, and even violent imagery. They would use that against him at all costs, and as we have seen, Becky and her husband Chad are not really your allies when their own personal interests are on the line.

If anything, this man still needs to heal, let some time pass, and create new imagery from which to create a platform. Image is everything, even when you are an orange sitting in the oval office. That orange can be violent and belligerent, because historically, white men have been able to get away with that, but not the case for black men, unless they are athletes, action stars, or in the military. The calculus for the acceptable expression of aggression in males of both races is very different, and unfortunately for Stevante, he must drastically change the imagery surrounding him to have a meaningful impact on any community he wishes to change going forward.

I wish the best for him. He doesn’t stand a chance. Sac is decidedly “blue” but blue with white dems who support the repub da (And all the repub da’s before her) and repub sheriff and keeps voting for higher taxes for cops... Plus, after the mess the pedo Kevin Johnson made of things... just no.

I hope he can do those things he wants to do anyway, though, and that he gains support from folk in the city. Recall that the two black city council members supported the police (always support the police) - though one may have changed his opinion very late so, does he count?

In any case, good luck to you, sir.

Sacramento resident and voter here. Daily Root reader but only occasional commenter so I’m in the grays.

Stevante Clark has some good ideas. You know who probably agrees with him? Darrell Steinberg, the liberal mayor he’s trying to replace. The real issue, as always, is money - how do these ideas get funded and stay funded annually? Meanwhile, the city also needs to fund parks, schools, roads, flood control, transportation and the really big ticket items: homelessness and city worker pensions. If the funding question were easily solved, Steinberg (or his predecessor, former NBA player Kevin Johnson) would’ve done it already.

If Stevante has a plan to pay for all his ideas, he should absolutely run for mayor. But he better know that being mayor involves making a lot of tough choices that rarely make everyone happy.

Here’s a few alternatives - 1) reach out to everyone who marched in the streets after Stephon Clark was killed and make sure they’re registered to vote; 2) start attending city council meetings and maintain pressure on the mayor and council to address the needs of South Sacramento residents; or 3) run for city council instead- it’s got as much power as the mayor’s office but he’d deal with only a fraction of the city’s voters.
