When will people learn that racism doesn’t require intention? That lets like 90% of racists off the hook (which is the point, I know) since they almost never consider their actions racist, no matter how clearly racist they are, and therefore can’t intend those actions to be racist

Never, because it’s their only “out”.

“Intent” is the last refuge of people who fucked up and refuse to admit it. It’s how they save their pride. This kid will grow up fucked up because he did something wrong, but everyone else gets in trouble and the school covers for him by talking about his “intent.”

If you punch someone, it doesn’t matter if you didn’t intend to hurt them. You still did.

I had an old history assignment I did as a teacher. Research something on that happened on your birthday. Unbeknownst to me, the KKK was founded on this kid’s day . They had to write a paper and do something art wise. He brought in a KKK outfit on butcher paper. I called the parent, she knew and didnt care and helped! She insisted it be hung in the hall with other children’s so to not upset him. The principal agreed. These were 14 year olds. Thats the year I quit teaching.

How do kids born on infamous days handle this? Tomorrow is my son’s birthday and all the “your birthday in history” junk is about JFK getting assassinated.

Well yea if you want to get technical about it the kid wasn’t trying to be racist. They were clearly succeeding at it!

I’m sure most racists aren’t trying. It just comes naturally.

All I could hear was the voice of Yoda in my head: “Do or do not. There is no try.” I think we can agree this falls under the category of “do”. Sigh.

    hurt many people’s feelings

I don’t know. These things never hurt my feelings. I would say that most of the time my predominant reaction is a little bit of shock with a lot of bewilderment. No matter what was intended, how did the teacher not know that this would be a problem?

Because as long as you don’t “intend” to be hateful, then it can’t be racist.

Prevailing sadness is my overriding emotion. I wouldn’t say it ‘hurt my feelings’ because that would imply that a dumb kid in a place I’ve never heard of thought it would be funny or a good idea to dress up as a hateful racist/terrorist.

Stories like this are not surprising, consider the president.

Seriously, what’s up with white parents?

This also raises the question whether the parents were fine with it because, you know, he’s wearing dad’s hood! Or are these stupid “woke” white parents who thought this was a great idea to show a point about racism or something...

This is middle of nowhere Missouri...I am not going with “woke” being the overriding cultural issue.

Agreed. This is Poplar Bluff, ain’t nothing woke at all about that town. Have relatives that live down that way and there were still ‘sundown towns’ down that way well into my childhood.

Funny thing: the teacher is obviously a clueless idiot who failed to bring his student's racist, attention seeking-asshat-ish behavior to a screeching halt. But if a black kid wears a BLM tee or refuses to stand for the anthem all hell breaks loose. Ok.

    *Goes into the review booth*

After further review, the call on the field stands.

“But students in the class took photos of the KKKid and uploaded them to social media, completely ignoring the group member in the sheriff’s uniform who was dressed as Bull Connor.”

Like having someone dress up a Bull Connor somehow makes the whole situation better.....

Racist person + racist group = racism

C'mon now Cousin Pam! See this for the late 90s sketch comedy gold that it is. Doesn't anyone remember jimmy Kimmels blackface? Or Jimmy Fallon? Geesh...America used to have a sense of humor! /s

Jimmy wasn’t in blackface my friend.  The outfit and how we styled his hair was as close as he could possibly get but he did not darken his skin....similar to how Al Roker dressed as Doc from Back To The Future but he did not whiten his skin. THAT’S how you’re supposed to do it.

“Seriously, what’s up with white parents? Didn’t they notice anything when the kid wanted to go to KKKMart? Did they see the charge for “1 medium Klan robe” on the credit card statement?”

Silly Michael: he put that on lay away like all those lumpen degenerates do. /S

But on a serious note: this is just another exhibit in the vast catalogue of the psychic programming of white supremacy defacto genocidal peddling racism in this country. This teacher is innured to it because, like most white folks, it is a threat display that benefits them. They’re not going to recognize systems of oppression that OVERWHELMINGLY benefit them at the cost of damages done to those they seem “less than.”

Why else would a teacher in a majority white school/district/town be at first OK with this? These people are the minions of the Great Satan, Racism.
