I avoid local news like the plague and havent talked to anyone all weekend so I hadnt heard about this but I remember when that useless jackass Frank Jackson hired Mason in the first place and people (i.e. black women) were incensed.  How in the fuck you can even hold any sort of government position with that on your record is a mystery to me.

I didn’t know about Jackson hiring Mason until the news broke of that monster/coward killing her.

I’ve seen people saying that Ohio is a cesspool and that women should move away from here. Yeah, that sounds great on paper, but, for a vast majority of women, that just isn’t remotely possible. If anything, these horrible men should be banished, never to go anywhere near their family. You forfeit that right when you laid hands on your wife/girlfriend. You have to go. Period.

Make these monsters lives just as hard as they made their significant others/family.  Fuck them.

Domestic violence only escalates. If they’re slapping you today, they’ll be punching you tomorrow and be killing you before the end of the week.

We Black men need to stamp this shit out in our community, because can’t nobody else do it for us. If you see something, say something. You can’t be pro-Black while you protect Black abusers.

    Rest in peace, Aisha.

Men deserves chance after chance and women are always supposed to forgive and forget. It’s always our duty to put them first because they have it so hard (SMH). I’m so sick of this.

Sometimes younger than 15, but they look older, so those girls deserve what they get, too.

I made the mistake on clicking on the article and seeing his picture. Why does this dude look shady? If I saw him on the bench and I was there for a parking ticket, I would be scared that I was going to get 10 - 15 years.

It’s that big blinding smile. It is supposed to signal that this guy is a wonderful, friendly sort of person, but there is actually no warmth coming from his face; his eyes don’t smile.

My ex had that smile plastered on his face everywhere except at home.

In 2017, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson hired Mason, who had “punched his then-wife 20 times and slammed her head against the dashboard of his car five times, breaking her orbital bone,” as director of minority business development. That’s right; the mayor put a man like Mason in charge of people’s livelihoods.

    Jesus.

I couldn’t believe “Prospector” Frank Jackson personally hired that monster after the horrible things the former Judge did to his wife.

He didn’t deserve a second chance after that, I’m sorry.  In a perfect world, he should have never been allowed anywhere near his wife and children, ever again, after what he did.  God, this is just horrible on every level imaginable.

The “good” Mayor should resign and do it, today.

Why wouldn’t he though? Do you permanently lose the ability to get a job if you’re out of prison, but your crime is highly upsetting?

He can get a job, but not in a public taxpayers capacity. Hell no. We The People footing the bill for someone who mistreats his family? Naw, you can’t be getting paid by taxpayer’s coin.

Any time I sought help from the cops when my ex was abusing me, I was immediately asked if I was supposed to be on any medication. Because I was visibly upset. Because, for instance, he pulled a gun out of the center console in the car, pointed it at me, forced me out of the car and left me (with no money and no ID) at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. Or, I was barefoot and sobbing having run out of my house after he picked me up and threw me across the room into a bookshelf.

But I’m the fucking problem. Because I was crying. Burn it all down.

I get what you are trying to say. This is why it’s not helpful. When we (as a society) hear about abuse and immediately start saying “oh what a monster” we provide cover. It’s meant to be helpful, but all it really does is create a gap between reality and our righteous indignation.

Because these are people. These are people who are your friends, and family members and neighbors. My ex is the charming dad at your kid’s soccer games. The cop was the deacon in your church. They are not other. They are in plain sight and they get away with it because abusers tend to be very very good at compartmentalization and only their victims see them true.

So, thank you for the empathy. But let’s not put these people in some special group that precludes them from being your best buddy.

    Oh God, it gets worse:

“The Masons’ 11-year-old daughter, Audrey, has Down syndrome and had open-heart surgery when she was 8 months old in order to repair a hole in her heart.”

And this is why domestic violence perpetrated by someone steeped in toxic masculinity and narcissism is so dangerous. He probably never thought of deliberately harming his children when he was beating their mother or murdering her, but he WOULDN'T have thought of them because everyone is just an afterthought for these sorts of men. Like planets orbiting his sun.  The rage they feel when their egos are bruised just swallows everyone else up.

Unpopular, strident opinion here: you say he probably didn’t think about harming his kids? Oh, I think he would and did.

What mental process or moral compass are you counting on in men that allows him to differentiate between harming a smaller, more fragile (presumably) woman because she angers him and harming a smaller, more fragile child who angers him? You’d bet your housenote on that process/morality?!

I wouldn’t. That’s why I think men AND women proven to be abusers...PROVEN...should lose custody and visitation with their children too. Just send the money to the court.

No kid needs anything else you have to offer.

      Argue amongst yourselves.

Actually, I think we ARE in agreement but that perhaps the way I worded the last post lent itself to a little misunderstanding.

What I was trying to explain is that this “man” is the type to leave a lot of collateral damage in his wake. When he wanted to beat Mama, that’s who was going to get it, and when he killed their Mama, he did the ultimate irreparable harm to her children. But when Mama was still alive, he was continuing to escalate these awful actions and allow them to heighten. This man probably cared little about the wellbeing of those children, and he probably also didn’t care enough to try to help deal with the pain he had caused them. The pain they felt through the pain their mother endured was spillover pain; pain that was always incidental to the original violent goal planned by the abuser. He was so focused on punishing “his” woman that he probably never thought out the effects of others, most notably, his own children.

But yes, that’s only one kind of dynamic in the realm of abuse, and hell yes, I believe a man who beats his wife—and this woman wasn’t merely hit, her face was smashed repeatedly—will likely take it out on the kids at one point as well.

Wow.... “In much the same way that whiteness protects itself, men protect and uplift each other to the detriment of those around them with terrifying constancy. And then those men do harm, often irreparable harm.”

You are spot on and one hell of a writer, Natalie. This piece needs to shared widely.
